What is an antitrust?

An Antitrust job involves analyzing and enforcing laws that promote fair competition and prevent monopolistic practices. Professionals in this field work for government agencies, law firms, or corporations to investigate mergers, anti-competitive behavior, and compliance with antitrust regulations. They may conduct legal research, review business practices, and advise clients on regulatory risks. Antitrust specialists help ensure a competitive market by preventing price-fixing, market allocation, and other unfair trade practices.

What is antitrust work?

Antitrust work involves analyzing and enforcing laws that promote competition and prevent monopolies, price-fixing, and other anti-competitive practices. Antitrust professionals often review mergers, conduct investigations, and provide legal advice to ensure compliance with competition regulations, requiring strong analytical and legal skills.

Is antitrust law a good career?

Antitrust law is a specialized legal field focused on promoting competition and preventing monopolies, often requiring a law degree and passing the bar exam. Careers in this area can be rewarding for those interested in economic regulation, with opportunities in law firms, government agencies, and corporate compliance, typically involving analytical skills and knowledge of competition policy.

What is an example of an antitrust employment practice?

An example of an antitrust employment practice is a no-poach agreement, where companies agree not to hire each other's employees, which can restrict competition for labor. Such practices are illegal under antitrust laws because they limit employee mobility and suppress wages.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of an antitrust attorney or specialist?

Antitrust professionals spend their days analyzing mergers and acquisitions, assessing business practices for potential competition concerns, and preparing briefs, reports, or presentations for clients and regulatory bodies. Much of the work involves conducting legal or economic research, collaborating with economists, business professionals, and regulators, and sometimes representing clients during negotiations or proceedings. Tasks may also include monitoring regulatory developments and advising organizations on antitrust compliance. The role often requires juggling multiple cases or projects simultaneously, making time management and teamwork especially important. These responsibilities ensure that organizations operate within legal parameters while promoting fair and open market competition.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the antitrust position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Antitrust attorney or specialist, you need a deep understanding of antitrust laws, economic principles, and legal research, typically backed by a law degree (JD) and relevant bar admission or advanced economics qualifications. Familiarity with legal research databases (e.g., LexisNexis, Westlaw), regulatory compliance tools, and sometimes economic modeling software is essential. Strong analytical thinking, persuasive communication, and the ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams set outstanding professionals apart. These skills and qualities are crucial to effectively analyze complex market behaviors, advise clients or employers, and advocate in high-stakes regulatory settings.

Job description

About Latham & Watkins
Latham & Watkins is one of the world's leading global law firms advising the businesses and institutions that drive the global economy. We are the market leaders in major financial and business centers globally and offer unmatched expertise and resources to help you grow from an intellectually curious self-starter into an exceptional lawyer. If you aspire to be the best, this is where you belong.
About the Practice Group
We represent companies, financial institutions, private equity firms, and individuals in their most significant and high-stakes disputes. We tailor our litigation teams to the specific characteristics of each matter, drawing on a global team of seasoned litigators and trial lawyers to match the industry, claims, subject matter, client goals, and venue at play. Regardless of the nature of the dispute, we adopt a trial-ready strategy from the outset to achieve the best result for the client, in whatever form success takes.
Our deep bench of experienced trial lawyers, including dozens of former US federal prosecutors, have successfully tried or arbitrated hundreds of cases to verdict in the last decade. Opposing counsel know our track record of taking the toughest cases to trial and winning - a reputation that often influences settlement considerations when our name appears on the docket.
We pair our experience with a fluency in the market dynamics that are influencing industries - from financial services to technology and energy to life sciences - across the world. We routinely litigate business torts, contract and joint venture disputes, fraud and unfair competition as well as consumer protection claims, insolvency and restructuring matters, insurance coverage, and trade secrets cases across a wide range of industries and venues. This diverse practice gives us insight into the litigation strategies that help our clients prevail.
Our clients' business objectives guide our litigation planning. We take into account the size of the matter, the client's exposure or up side, and the significance of the case to the client. Recognizing that litigation is just one part of a larger business strategy, we evaluate early exit options to minimize costs, including dispositive motions, alternative dispute resolution, and settlement, as well as third-party indemnification and insurance coverage.
About the Role
Latham's Global Antitrust and Competition Practice seeks a skilled and highly qualified associate with a minimum of two years of experience in antitrust litigation and/or merger control to join its rapidly expanding practice. The ideal candidate will have substantive knowledge of antitrust law, strong writing skills, and would join our 3rd to 7th-year associate class.
