What is an antibody discovery?

An Antibody Discovery job involves identifying and developing new therapeutic antibodies for medical applications, such as disease treatment or diagnostics. Scientists in this role use techniques like hybridoma technology, phage display, and single B-cell screening to discover novel antibodies. They collaborate with immunologists, molecular biologists, and bioinformaticians to optimize antibody properties like specificity and affinity. This role is critical in biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries, contributing to drug development and precision medicine.

What does an antibody discovery do?

In an Antibody Discovery position, you can expect to design and conduct experiments to identify and optimize novel antibodies, analyze large datasets, and troubleshoot protocols. Your daily work often involves hands-on laboratory research, documenting results, and regularly discussing findings with project teams and cross-functional colleagues such as bioinformaticians and protein engineers. Collaboration is key, as many projects require coordination across different scientific disciplines. Additionally, you may present research updates, contribute to patent applications, and keep abreast of new technologies in antibody engineering. This dynamic environment offers continuous learning and professional growth for scientists passionate about therapeutic innovation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in antibody discovery?

To excel in Antibody Discovery, a strong background in molecular biology, immunology, and protein engineering—often supported by an advanced degree (MSc or PhD)—is essential. Experience with lab techniques such as phage display, flow cytometry, and bioinformatics analysis software is commonly required, along with familiarity with data management systems. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, communication, and teamwork skills are highly valued in this role. These skills ensure precise experimental results, effective collaboration, and innovation in developing novel therapeutic antibodies.
