Job description

Hi, Future Homie!
At Homebase, you'll join a team that's bold, fast-moving, and obsessed with helping small businesses thrive. We build with empathy, act with urgency, and take big swings that drive real-world impact. Here, every Homie shows up to raise the bar, support one another, and celebrate wins as a team.
We're not just building an app-we're building unstoppable teams. So what do you say, are you in?
This is a 6-month, full-time, hybrid internship based in our Toronto, San Francisco, or Denver office with mentorship from senior designers.
Your Impact Starts Here
We're looking for a talented Visual & Motion Design Intern to elevate the craft and polish of our product experiences across mobile and web. You'll work closely with product designers, engineers, and the design systems team to bring interfaces to life through purposeful animation, refined visual details, and pixel-perfect execution.
This is a hands-on maker role. You'll create motion studies, UI animations, micro-interactions, and visual refinements that make our product feel alive, responsive, and delightful. Whether it's a subtle loading state, a satisfying transition, data visualizations, or a moment of celebration, your work will shape how our product feels across iOS, Android, and the web.
These are the key ways you'll contribute and create impact in this role:
Elevate product craft:
  • Design and prototype motion patterns for key product interactions across mobile and web, including transitions, feedback states, loading indicators, component behaviors, and celebratory moments
  • Partner with product designers to add polish and refinement to shipped features
  • Create high-fidelity visual assets and ensure pixel-perfect implementation across platforms
  • Work across data visualizations, illustrations, micro-interactions, and UI transitions

Build motion language:
  • Help establish motion principles, timing curves, and animation patterns that scale across our design system
  • Document motion guidelines and contribute reusable assets to our component library
  • Drive consistency in how motion is applied across iOS, Android, and web surfaces

Collaborate across disciplines:
  • Work closely with engineers to ensure animations are performant and implementable across platforms
  • Participate in design critiques and contribute to raising the bar for visual quality across the team
  • Act as both a hands-on motion designer and a conceptual contributor on projects

Prototype and explore:
  • Create interactive prototypes to communicate complex interactions and validate design directions
  • Explore new visual directions and push creative boundaries on select projects
  • Consider every part of the experience, from motion to visual polish to implementation

Support design systems:
  • Contribute motion and visual assets to the design system
  • Help define and standardize motion patterns that scale across teams
  • Assist in maintaining consistency across iOS, Android, and web surfaces

AI-first design contribution:
  • Experiment with AI tools (e.g., generative design, motion exploration, workflow automation) to accelerate design output and iteration speed
  • Identify opportunities to improve design workflows using AI and measure the impact on speed or quality

The Foundation for Success - These are the experiences and strengths that will set you up for success in this role:
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating motion design, UI animation, and visual craft in product contexts across mobile and web
  • Proficiency in Figma and motion tools such as After Effects, Principle, Rive, Lottie, or similar
  • Understanding of animation principles, including timing, easing, spatial relationships, and choreography
  • Experience designing for both mobile (iOS and Android) and web platforms
  • Ability to translate static designs into fluid, purposeful motion
  • Attention to detail and a high bar for visual polish
  • Clear communication skills to articulate design decisions
  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a Master's degree in Design, Motion Graphics, Animation, or a related field (preferred)
  • Candidates with strong formal training in visual/motion design are prioritized
  • Bootcamp-only backgrounds without formal visual/motion training are not a fit for this role
  • Portfolio demonstrating foundational motion and visual design skills (academic work welcome)
  • Eagerness to learn, rec

Bonus points if you bring:
  • Experience with product design (not just marketing or brand motion)
  • Familiarity with platform-specific motion patterns for iOS and Android
  • Understanding of implementation constraints (CSS animations, Lottie, React Native, native animations)
  • Experience contributing to or working within a design system
  • Proficiency in Cinema 4D, Blender, or other 3D tools
  • Background in data visualization or information design
  • Experience using AI tools to improve design workflows or output

The Homie Way - These principles guide everything we do-from how we work and make decisions to how we show up for each other.
  • Be Customer Obsessed - Solve problems with empathy and creativity.
  • Move Fast, Learn Fast - Experiment, take action, and grow every day.
  • Own Your Impact - Think big, focus on what matters, and make decisions you stand behind.
  • Master Your Craft - Excellence fuels impact-show up, step up, and make your mark.
  • Win Together - Put goals over roles, lead with trust, and connect to our mission and each other.

What to Expect During the Interview Process
  • Meet the Talent Acquisition team, Ivana L.
  • Meet the Hiring Manager (Portfolio Review - focused on one case study), Jan S.
  • Hiring Manager / Behavioral Interview (learning goals, skills, and team fit)
  • Background Check + Offer Stage
  • Welcome to the team, Homie

Belonging at Homebase - We're committed to fostering a welcoming space where every Homie can be their full self. Experience comes in many forms-so if you're excited about this role, even if you don't meet 100% of the qualifications, we encourage you to apply!
