Job description

Position Summary

The Large Animal Surgical Specialist is responsible for supporting in vivo preclinical research activities involving large animal models, including surgical procedures, perioperative support, animal handling, and operational coordination. This role works closely with Study Directors, research scientists, and operational teams to ensure high-quality study execution, animal welfare compliance, and adherence to company protocols and regulatory standards. This position requires strong technical surgical skills, comfort working in a fast-paced research environment, and the ability to safely handle large animal models in accordance with established SOPs and safety procedures.

Essential Duties

Perform and assist with surgical procedures involving large animal models, including pigs, monkeys, sheeps, dogs, and other species as applicable.

Support preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative animal care activities

Safely handle, restrain, move, and monitor large animals using approved procedures, equipment, and team-lift practices

Prepare surgical suites, instruments, supplies, and study materials

Assist with anesthesia monitoring, procedural support, and recovery activities

Maintain accurate study documentation and procedural records in accordance with company SOPs and applicable regulatory requirements

Collaborate with Study Directors, veterinarians, QA, and research staff to support successful study execution

Ensure compliance with animal welfare regulations, biosafety standards, and company policies

Participate in schedule coordination and operational coverage planning for study activities

Communicate proactively regarding scheduling, procedural needs, and operational issues

Support troubleshooting and continuous improvement initiatives within the in vivo research program

Perform additional duties as assigned

Qualifications

Bachelorโ€™s degree in Life Sciences, Veterinary Technology, Animal Science, Biomedical Sciences, or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience

Experience working with large animal models in a research, veterinary, surgical, or laboratory environment

Experience supporting or performing surgical procedures

Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced operational environment

Strong communication, teamwork, and organizational skills

Ability to follow SOPs, safety procedures, and study protocols accurately

Flexibility to support operational schedules and study timelines

Preferred

Experience with preclinical CRO or GLP-regulated environments
