Job description

The AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure) Network Engineer is responsible for design, maintenance, and operational performance of Eversource's AMI network systems. This individual should:
  • Enjoy problem solving complex wireless network issues.
  • Be familiar with wireless signal analyzers, RF design software, and wireless communication hardware/tooling.
  • Feel comfortable working with third parties to design and build solutions to unique areas, allowing wireless signal penetration.

Essential Functions:
  • Create/review/revise network designs to ensure they meet Eversource's AMI system performance requirements.
  • Ensure projects and assignments are completed safely, efficiently, on time and within the established budgets.
  • Ensure vendor work is completed in compliance with design specifications. Review/approve contractor and vendor invoices.
  • Manage and support initial and ongoing testing of the AMI network.
  • Coordinate with Eversource IT/Communications to manage network backhaul.
  • Analyze, identify, and resolve backhaul issues.
  • Lead projects to upgrade, optimize, and expand the AMI network to keep up with new customer construction and evolving AMI system needs.
  • Coordinate and supervise field construction and maintenance of AMI network assets/infrastructure.
  • Perform office and field troubleshooting of AMI network equipment.
  • Provide input to improve processes for monitoring and maintaining the AMI network.
  • Understand and ensure compliance with requirements and standards set forth by industry organizations and regulatory bodies such as FCC, IEEE, etc.
  • Provide on-call support for emergency situations and critical network failures.
  • Develop and implement preventive maintenance programs to minimize downtime and extend equipment lifespan.
  • Ensure all documentation complies with company standards.
  • Stay updated on industry trends, new technologies, and best practices to enhance network performance.
  • Participate in strategic planning and contribute to the development of long-term goals for the AMI network

Qualifications:
Technical Knowledge/Skill:
  • Comprehensive understanding of the design, specification and installation of wireless telecommunications systems, such as radio, cellular, and phone.
  • Strong communications and presentation skills
  • Strong ability to organize and coordinate a team to design and build out a project.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and attention-to-detail.
  • Working knowledge of standard office computer software (e.g., Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.).

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related discipline.
  • Advanced degree preferred.

Experience:
  • Five (5) years of experience with AMI architectures, protocols, and technologies, such as cellular, RF-mesh, WiFi, and IoT.
  • Proficiency in configuring and troubleshooting network infrastructure components, such as routers, switches, and gateways.
  • Hands-on experience with test equipment, including meters, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and communication testers.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to debug complex systems and identify root causes of issues.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Detail-oriented mindset with a commitment to quality and customer satisfaction.
