Job description

Amazon Leo is Amazon's low Earth orbit satellite network. Our mission is to deliver fast, reliable internet connectivity to customers beyond the reach of existing networks. From individual households to schools, hospitals, businesses, and government agencies, Amazon Leo will serve people and organizations operating in locations without reliable connectivity.
Achieving that mission requires engineers who thrive on solving complex, multidisciplinary problems and delivering hardware that performs flawlessly from manufacturing through launch and years of operation in space.
As a Mechanical Engineer on the Avionics Mechanical team, you will design and develop the mechanical implementation of spacecraft electrical systems from early architecture through flight hardware. You will work alongside Mechanical, Electrical, Thermal, Reliability, and Manufacturing engineers to develop innovative solutions that protect sensitive electronics while enabling efficient assembly, qualification, production, and long-term mission success.
This role requires strong mechanical engineering fundamentals, sound problem-solving skills, and the ability to work across disciplines to develop reliable flight hardware. You will own hardware throughout the product lifecycle while balancing performance, reliability, manufacturability, cost, and schedule.
Export Control Requirement: Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Key job responsibilities
- Design and develop spacecraft avionics hardware from concept through production.
- Partner with Electrical Engineering to integrate circuit boards, connectors, harnesses, and electronic assemblies into robust mechanical designs.
- Perform engineering analyses and trade studies to support design decisions.
- Develop hardware that withstands launch, vibration, thermal cycling, radiation, and the space environment.
- Support qualification testing, manufacturing, and hardware troubleshooting.
- Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to identify and retire technical risk.
- Investigate failures and implement design improvements throughout the product lifecycle.
- Contribute to engineering best practices and continuous improvement efforts.
A day in the life
As a Mechanical Engineer, you'll work closely with engineers across multiple disciplines to develop flight-ready spacecraft hardware. Your day may include designing new avionics hardware, supporting design reviews, analyzing qualification test results, working with manufacturing to resolve hardware issues, or collaborating with suppliers to improve component designs. You'll gain exposure to the full hardware development lifecycle while contributing to products that will operate in one of the most demanding engineering environments.
About the team
The Avionics Mechanical team partners closely with Electrical Engineering to ensure every spacecraft electrical subsystem is mechanically robust throughout manufacturing, launch, and mission life. The team is responsible for the structural implementation of avionics hardware, including enclosure design, packaging architecture, mounting strategies, and environmental protection.
Working alongside Electrical Engineering, Structures, Thermal Engineering, Reliability Engineering, and Manufacturing Engineering, the team develops solutions that protect sensitive electronics from launch loads, vibration, thermal cycling, radiation, and the space environment. Engineers solve challenging problems involving PCB support, connector retention, thermal interfaces, fastener design, electronics packaging, and long-term material durability while balancing system performance with manufacturability.
Beyond flight hardware, the team also develops the specialized qualification hardware, manufacturing fixtures, inspection tooling, and test equipment that enable efficient verification throughout the product lifecycle. We are a highly collaborative organization that values first-principles engineering, technical curiosity, and a bias toward delivering practical solutions that enable reliable spacecraft at scale.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 3+ years of working in mechanical engineering or equivalent experience
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent
- Experience in the design of complex mechanical products and equipment at volume
- Experience with CAD tools and engineering documentation.
- Experience working in cross-functional engineering teams.
- Understanding of mechanical design fundamentals, materials, manufacturing processes, and tolerance analysis.
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent
- Experience developing aerospace, defense, medical device, automotive, semiconductor, or consumer electronics products.
- Experience designing electronics packaging or electromechanical assemblies.
- Experience supporting environmental qualification or reliability testing.
- Familiarity with FMEA, DFM/DFA, V&V, and root cause analysis.
- Experience collaborating across multiple engineering disciplines throughout product development.
