What is a Tesla mechanic?

A Tesla mechanic is a specialized automotive technician trained to diagnose, maintain, and repair Tesla electric vehicles. Unlike traditional mechanics, Tesla mechanics work primarily with electric drivetrains, high-voltage systems, and advanced onboard software unique to Tesla cars. They are typically certified through Tesla's own training programs or have experience working with electric vehicles. Tesla mechanics are skilled in both mechanical and electronic diagnostics to ensure the safety and performance of Tesla vehicles.

What are some unique challenges Tesla mechanics face compared to traditional automotive technicians?

Tesla mechanics often work with high-voltage electrical systems and cutting-edge diagnostic software, which require specialized training and strict adherence to safety protocols. Unlike traditional vehicles, Teslas feature advanced autonomous driving features and proprietary components, making troubleshooting and repairs more complex. Mechanics frequently collaborate with Tesla’s technical support teams and participate in ongoing training to stay current with rapid technological advancements. The role also involves a strong focus on customer service, as technicians often explain repairs and maintenance to Tesla owners.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Tesla mechanic, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Tesla Mechanic, you need strong automotive technical knowledge, electric vehicle (EV) repair skills, and usually a relevant certification or associate degree in automotive technology. Familiarity with Tesla diagnostic software, specialized EV tools, and high-voltage safety protocols is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication with customers and team members are crucial soft skills. These skills ensure efficient, safe repairs and superior customer service in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle industry.

Job description

Universal Motorcars is hiring an experienced Tesla Automotive Technician / Mechanic in Las Vegas.

We're looking for a technician with real hands-on experience diagnosing and repairing Tesla vehicles. This is not an entry-level EV position - we need someone who is comfortable troubleshooting problems, identifying the actual cause, and completing repairs correctly.

Our Tesla mechanical work includes A/C and climate systems, suspension, control arms, steering, alignment, cooling systems, electrical diagnostics and other mechanical repairs on Model 3, Model Y, Model S, Model X and Cybertruck.

Universal Motorcars is an established Las Vegas collision and automotive repair company, and we are continuing to expand our Tesla mechanical service department. We're looking for someone who wants steady work, professional equipment and an opportunity to become an important part of that growth.

Requirements

What You'll Work On

Tesla A/C and climate-control diagnosis and repair
A/C compressor replacement
Suspension and steering diagnosis
Control arms and related suspension components
Wheel alignment
Noise, vibration and drivability concerns
Electrical and mechanical diagnostics
Cooling-system repairs
General Tesla mechanical repairs
Pre- and post-repair inspection and testing

What We're Looking For

Professional hands-on experience repairing Tesla vehicles strongly preferred
Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills
Experience with automotive electrical systems
Experience with suspension, steering and A/C repair
Ability to diagnose the cause of a problem rather than simply replace parts
Comfortable working independently and completing repairs from diagnosis through final testing
Good attention to detail and workmanship
Reliable and professional
Valid driver's license
Own basic technician tools

Tesla certification is not required. Proven Tesla repair experience, diagnostic ability and quality of work are more important to us.

Benefits

Competitive compensation based on experience and skill level

Full-time position

Steady repair workload

Growing Tesla mechanical repair department

Opportunity to work extensively on Tesla vehicles

Professional shop environment and diagnostic equipment

Established automotive repair and collision company

Opportunity for long-term growth as our Tesla service department expands

Work with an experienced automotive team

Las Vegas-based position - no mobile or field repairs
