What is an Amazon Alexa developer?

Amazon Alexa Developers are professionals who design, build, and maintain voice-driven applications (called Alexa Skills) for Amazon's Alexa-enabled devices. They use development tools and frameworks such as the Alexa Skills Kit (ASK), AWS Lambda, and various programming languages like Node.js or Python to create interactive voice experiences. These developers work to enhance user engagement with Alexa by integrating new functionalities, troubleshooting issues, and updating existing skills based on user feedback and technological advancements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Amazon Alexa developer?

To thrive as an Amazon Alexa Developer, you need a strong understanding of software development, voice user interface (VUI) design, and proficiency in languages like JavaScript or Python, often supported by a background in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with AWS Lambda, Alexa Skills Kit (ASK), and related certification such as AWS Certified Alexa Skill Builder are typically required. Strong problem-solving, creativity, and effective communication distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure the creation of intuitive, engaging, and reliable Alexa skills that meet user needs and drive adoption.

What are some common challenges faced by Amazon Alexa developers when building voice-first applications?

Amazon Alexa Developers often encounter challenges related to designing intuitive and natural voice user interfaces. Ensuring the skill accurately interprets diverse user intents and responds clearly can be complex, especially with varied speech patterns and accents. Developers also need to rigorously test and refine conversational flows, handle unexpected user inputs gracefully, and stay updated with Alexa's evolving APIs and best practices. Collaboration with UX designers, testers, and sometimes content creators is key to delivering an engaging and accessible voice experience.

Job description

Alexa is a strategic investment for Amazon, and we're building a voice and touch shopping assistant convenient enough that customers worldwide reach for it every day. Alexa Shopping aims to understand the needs of all shoppers - regardless of language, background, abilities, or economic means.
With Alexa Shopping now live on Amazon.com in addition to devices, the surface area of our features has expanded several times over. We're building a new framework to ensure the quality of everything we ship, across hundreds of millions of Alexa endpoints worldwide, each with different form factors, capabilities, and customer contexts

We're looking for a Senior SDE to architect that framework and build the system that enforces it. It will define what quality means for Alexa Shopping, and every experience we ship will pass through it.
You'll help build a framework that answers some genuinely open problems. How do you check correctness when the output is generated rather than retrieved, and there's no right answer to compare against

How do you decide which release gates need automated checks and which don't. How do you make a quality signal reliable enough that teams ship on it instead of working around it. Your answers become the standard the rest of the org builds on.

You'll set technical direction across Alexa Shopping and Amazon Stores, working through other engineers as much as through your own code.
You'll have room to experiment and invent on behalf of customers, and you'll work with a leadership team that treats senior engineers as technical leaders, including mentorship inside and outside the org.
About the team
We're a horizontal platform team that every shopping vertical depends on. Our mission is to make quality and velocity the default for Alexa Shopping engineers, owning the technology that spans developer experience and the AI-powered developer lifecycle (DLC) through to QA automation across voice, visual, and touch. We act as force multipliers, building the frameworks that let every Shopping team move faster without compromising quality

We partner closely with teams across Alexa, favor reuse over rebuild, and care deeply about the craft of engineering.
