Job description

Senior AI Software Engineer โ€“ Alpha Lab

Empower LTC Pharmacies. Save Lives. Build the Future of Healthcare Technology.

About Softwriters

Softwriters develops innovative IT solutions that empower longterm care (LTC) pharmacies to deliver lifesaving medications more efficiently and accurately. As a voted top workplace in Pittsburgh, we combine meaningful work with a collaborative culture where your contributions directly impact patient care.

As a market leader in longterm care pharmacy technology, we continue to invest in teams that explore new ideas quicklyโ€”while maintaining the rigor required in a highly regulated healthcare environment. Our people and culture are our differentiator, and our mission is at the center of everything we build.

Location: Hybrid โ€“ Pittsburgh, PA (Core office days: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday)
Reports to: Director, Product Operations and Execution

The Opportunity

This isnโ€™t a role where AI is just a buzzword on a roadmap โ€” itโ€™s central to what weโ€™re building. Alpha Lab is our innovation engine: a focused team responsible for rapidly designing, prototyping, and validating the next generation of product capabilities. Youโ€™ll be one of the engineers shaping how we build AI here โ€” influencing architecture decisions, setting engineering standards, and turning early-stage ideas into working software that reaches real users.

Our products span cloud-hosted services, onprem applications, mobile platforms, and hybrid data environments, which means the design space is wide and the problems are genuinely varied.

If youโ€™ve shipped production software, have experience applying AI to real workflows, and thrive in environments where the problem isnโ€™t fully defined yet โ€” this role was built for you. Youโ€™ll help take ideas from early concept through to validated, shippable handoff, partnering closely with Core Engineering as successful experiments transition forward.

What Youโ€™ll Own

  • Design, build, and iterate on AIenabled product experiences โ€” including LLM integrations, multistep agentic workflows, and ondevice AI capabilities โ€” built with the engineering rigor and production thinking needed for realworld deployment
  • Implement applicationlayer patterns for AI features: orchestration, tool use, context handling, fallbacks, and latency optimization โ€” the hard parts that make AI reliable in real workflows
  • Rapidly prototype new product concepts, translating ambiguous hypotheses into working software with measurable outcomes
  • Evaluate AI feature readiness across quality, reliability, cost, latency, and operational supportability โ€” and advocate clearly for whatโ€™s ready to move forward
  • Build with compliance in mind from day one: privacy, auditability, and data handling are foundational in a regulated healthcare environment
  • Drive engineering quality through clean, welltested code, thoughtful refactoring, and strong design and architecture reviews
  • Mentor teammates through code reviews, pairing, and technical discussions โ€” raising the bar for the entire team
  • Stay current on emerging AI and application engineering techniques and bring relevant learnings back to Alpha Lab

What Youโ€™ll Bring

The experience that matters most:

  • A track record of delivering and supporting production software at scale โ€” the kind of experience that tells you what breaks, why, and how to prevent it (typically 7+ years)
    • We welcome candidates across experience levels who bring strong engineering fundamentals and relevant handson experience. Final title, scope, and level will be aligned to an individualโ€™s skills, experience, and demonstrated impact.
  • Handson experience implementing AIenabled features in real workflows, including practical ownership of reliability, guardrails, failure modes, monitoring, latency, and cost
  • Deep familiarity with at least one of the following ecosystems:
    • .NET / C#
    • JavaScript / TypeScript (React, Angular, Node.js)
    • Mobile (iOS, Android, React Native)
  • Experience delivering software in regulated environments โ€” healthcare, finance, defense, or similar โ€” where security, privacy, and auditability are nonnegotiable
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals: you write maintainable, testable, highquality code as a matter of habit
  • Comfort working independently and collaboratively in fastmoving, iterative environments where priorities evolve and ambiguity is the norm
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent professional experience

Even Better If You Have

  • Experience with AI implementation techniques such as LLM integrations (Azure OpenAI, OpenAI, Bedrock), RAG and vector search, or agentic workflow orchestration
  • Background in pharmacy, longterm care, or adjacent healthcare domains
  • Experience with ondevice or edgecapable applications (mobile, embedded, offlinefirst environments)
  • Cloudnative development experience, particularly on Azure โ€” including containerized services and serverless architectures
  • Familiarity with regulatedfriendly design patterns: least privilege, encryption in transit and at rest, audit logging, and data minimization
  • Experience implementing observability practices: structured logging, metrics, tracing, and dashboards
  • Time spent in an innovation lab, R&D team, or incubator environment where success is measured by validated learning and rapid delivery

Why Alpha Lab

Most engineering roles ask you to execute on a defined spec. Alpha Lab asks you to help define what gets built โ€” and then build it. Youโ€™ll work at the intersection of modern AI capabilities and realworld healthcare constraints, where the problems are genuinely hard, the work matters, and the learning curve never flattens.

Weโ€™re early in building this team, which means the decisions you make now will shape how we work for years to come.

Why Youโ€™ll Love Working Here

Meaningful Work:

Your work directly impacts patient safety and the future of pharmacy technology across the healthcare system.

Modern Work Environment:

WorkLife Balance:

  • Hybrid work policy with flexible hours
  • RemoteWork Bank for additional flexibility

  • Floating holidays

Comprehensive Benefits:

  • Competitive salaryย

  • 401(k) with company match
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Wellness and employee assistance programs

  • Continuous learning and development opportunities
  • Crossfunctional collaboration
  • Clear career advancement paths
  • Conference and professional training budget

Our Values in Action

  • Innovators, Thought Leaders, Teachers: We invest in your growth and encourage knowledge sharing
  • Accountability and Ownership: Take initiative, own outcomes, celebrate wins
  • CustomerCentric: Direct connection to the pharmacies and patients we serve
  • Unyielding Integrity: Ethical decisionmaking in everything we do

Join a team where experimentation, engineering excellence, and patient impact intersect. If youโ€™re excited about building the next generation of healthcare technology and turning ideas into productionready solutions, weโ€™d love to meet you.

Note: This position does not sponsor work visas and requires the ability to work hybrid from our Pittsburgh office.
