Job Description

The Category Assistant Manager will be responsible for overseeing and managing specific sales categories within the store. This role emphasizes driving sales performance, enhancing customer experience, and ensuring category-specific targets are met. The Category Assistant Manager is fully trained in all opening and closing procedures and is cross-trained on all manager functions. They are assigned 1 or 2 of the 4 business categories and handle all operations within those categories, including store orders, training, inventory control, merchandising, sales, and employee management. Additionally, they have the ability to manage both front and back-end operations in the absence of the Store Manager and Operations Assistant Manager.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Sales Management

Manage and drive sales performance for 1 or 2 designated sales categories.

Develop and implement strategies to increase sales and meet revenue targets for assigned categories.

Analyze sales data and trends to identify opportunities for growth.

Ensure optimal product placement and presentation on the sales floor.

Collaborate with the Store Manager to plan and execute promotional activities.

Customer Service

Provide exceptional customer service and address customer inquiries and complaints.

Train and supervise sales associates on customer service standards and best practices.

Monitor and improve customer satisfaction levels in assigned sales categories.

Maintain high standards of customer service across the store.

Category Management

Oversee all operations within assigned categories, including store orders, training, inventory control, merchandising, sales, and employee management.

Assist in ordering and replenishing merchandise for assigned categories.

Monitor product performance and adjust merchandising strategies as needed.

Collaborate with vendors and suppliers to ensure product availability and quality.

Team Leadership

Supervise and motivate sales associates within assigned categories.

Conduct regular team meetings to discuss sales performance, goals, and strategies.

Provide feedback and coaching to enhance individual and team performance.

Assist in scheduling and staffing for peak sales periods.

Handle disciplinary actions for employees, including documenting and addressing performance issues.

Conduct performance reviews for employees, providing constructive feedback and setting goals for improvement.

Store Operations

Fully trained on opening and closing procedures of the store.

Manage front and back-end operations in the absence of the Store Manager and Operations Assistant Manager.

Assist with visual merchandising and store presentation.

Support the Store Manager and Operations Assistant Manager in daily store operations as needed.

Ensure compliance with company policies and procedures.

Sales Reporting and Analysis

Prepare and review sales reports for assigned categories.

Track key performance indicators (KPIs) and report on sales progress to the Store Manager.

Identify and address any issues affecting sales performance.

Cross-Training and Manager Functions

Cross-trained on all manager functions to provide support as needed.

Participate in training to develop and enhance managerial skills.

Learn and understand all aspects of store management, including financial performance, staff management, and operational efficiency.

Qualifications

Experience

Experienced in retail management or a similar role.

The employee is occasionally required to: use arms, shoulders, abdominal and lower back muscles to support kneeling and crawling on concrete or hard surfaces and climbing / descending ladders and rolling staircases while carrying loads.

Must be able to operate routine office equipment including computer terminals and keyboards, telephones, and copiers. Must be able to occasionally perform work on computer and keyboard, when necessary. Must be able to work extended hours whenever required or requested by management. Must be capable of regular, reliable, and timely attendance.

Lifting and Carrying Required: Heavy lifting is required. Lift up to 65 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds frequently, and/or up to 25 pounds continuously, from floor to waist and to a height of 60 inches. Carry up to 65 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds frequently, and/or up to 25 pounds continuously for distances up to 200 feet.

As this is a managerial position they will typically be working 50-55 hours per week.

Travel Required: Seldom - 0 - 10%; may require travel from time- to-time, but not on a regular basis.

Specific vision abilities required: Close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: data entry; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; reading; visual inspection.
