How much do algorithm developer jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 15, 2026, the average hourly pay for algorithm developer in Missouri is $73.63, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $62.69 and $83.41 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does an algorithm developer do?

An algorithm developer designs, analyzes, and implements algorithms to solve specific problems or improve processes, often working with data structures and programming languages. They optimize algorithms for efficiency and accuracy, frequently using tools like Python, C++, or MATLAB, and may collaborate with data scientists or software engineers. Their work is essential in fields such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, and software development.

How much do algorithm developers make?

Algorithm developers typically earn a median salary ranging from $80,000 to $130,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Senior roles or those with specialized skills in machine learning or data analysis can earn higher salaries, often exceeding $150,000 per year.

What are some common challenges Algorithm Developers face when transitioning from academia to industry roles?

Algorithm Developers transitioning from academia to industry often encounter challenges such as adapting to faster-paced project timelines and prioritizing practical, scalable solutions over theoretical elegance. In industry, collaboration with cross-functional teams—like software engineers and product managers—is essential, requiring strong communication and teamwork skills. Additionally, there is a greater emphasis on writing production-quality, well-documented code and aligning algorithmic work with business objectives. Learning to balance innovation with deliverable deadlines is a key part of succeeding in these roles.

Will AI replace algorithm developers?

AI is unlikely to fully replace algorithm developers, as their role involves designing, optimizing, and understanding complex algorithms that require human creativity and domain expertise. Instead, AI tools can assist developers by automating routine tasks and enhancing productivity, allowing them to focus on more advanced problem-solving and innovation.

What Does an Algorithm Developer Do?

The job duties of an algorithm developer revolve around researching, writing, and performance testing algorithms. As an algorithm developer, your responsibilities include working to implement your algorithms and then to analyze and modify them as needed. Generally, algorithms use data from a system to generate actions, processes, or reports, so with each algorithm you build, you must first identify the goals and then work to achieve specific results. In this career, you may collaborate with a team to create theories and then perform research and tests until you have designed an efficient algorithm.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

Senior software engineers, especially those working in high-demand fields like artificial intelligence, machine learning, or at major tech companies, can earn $500,000 or more annually. Compensation often includes base salary, bonuses, and stock options, and typically requires advanced skills, extensive experience, and sometimes leadership roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Algorithm Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Algorithm Developer, you need strong programming skills (often in languages like Python, C++, or Java), a solid grasp of data structures and algorithms, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), algorithm analysis tools, and sometimes knowledge of specialized libraries (e.g., NumPy, TensorFlow) is expected. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are vital soft skills for designing efficient solutions and collaborating with teams. These skills ensure the creation of robust, optimized algorithms that meet technical requirements and business goals.

Job description

Job Description

At Boeing, we innovate and collaborate to make the world a better place. We’re committed to fostering an environment for every teammate that’s welcoming, respectful and inclusive, with great opportunity for professional growth. Find your future with us.

Join a fast-paced Boeing Phantom Works program in Berkeley, MO responsible for integrating highly complex sensors, communications, and weapon systems. As a Design and Analysis Engineer (Mid-Level or Senior), you will develop and integrate multi-sensor fusion solutions that combine IR, RF, and offboard data to deliver reliable fused tracks and sensor products for mission-critical systems. This role spans algorithm design, real-time implementation, system integration, verification, and stakeholder communication.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Define system and interface requirements for multi-sensor fusion across IR and RF domains, and for integration of onboard and offboard sources (datalinks, distributed sensors).

  • Architect and document fusion solutions: block diagrams, data flows, latency/bandwidth budgets, timing, and synchronization.

  • Design, prototype, and evaluate fusion algorithms (track association, data association, state estimation, sensor registration, bias estimation, confidence/uncertainty quantification).

  • Develop simulations, test plans, and lead lab/field verification, validation, and performance characterization.

  • Specify and enforce data models, messaging formats, timestamping, and coordinate-frame conventions to ensure interoperable integration.

  • Integrate algorithms into real-time processors and embedded platforms; collaborate with SW/HW teams on optimization, profiling, and deployment.

  • Analyze failure modes, perform sensitivity and robustness studies, and specify fault detection/recovery behaviors.

  • Produce concise technical documentation for design decisions, validation results, and safety/compliance artifacts.

  • Communicate results, tradeoffs, and operational suitability to leadership, customers, and industry partners; support user demonstrations.

  • Own algorithm lifecycle: requirements → design → prototyping → verification → optimization → deployment → maintenance.

  • Take ownership of assigned capabilities and features and delivers end-to-end.

  • Communicate tradeoffs and recommended paths forward to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Proactively document decisions and contribute to reusable patterns and standards.

  • Level 3 Responsibilities:

    • Expected to independently deliver complex fusion features and integrations.

    • Own end-to-end algorithm development and prototype-to-embedded translation for assigned capability areas.

    • Mentor junior engineers and integrate across disciplinary teams (sensors, software, systems).

    • Contribute design artifacts and trade studies; drive verification of delivered capabilities.

  • Level 4 Responsibilities:

    • Leads cross-functional technical initiatives and sets architecture for major fusion capabilities or subsystems.

    • Drives system-level requirements, end-to-end data flow designs, and architectural trade-offs impacting multiple teams.

    • Responsible for technical mentorship, standards, and enabling scalable integration and verification practices.

    • Frequently represents the program in technical reviews with customers and partners.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills and Experience):

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering (with a focus in Electrical, Mechanical or Aeronautical), Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or non-US equivalent qualifications directly related to the work statement.

  • Level 3: 5+ years of related work experience and a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of related work experience and technical education.

  • Level 4: 9+ years of related work experience and a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of related work experience and technical education.

  • Solid experience (Level 3: ~5+ years; Level 4: ~9+ years) in multi-sensor data fusion, tracking, or signal processing for IR and/or RF domains.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills and Experience):

  • Demonstrated competency with sensor fusion techniques: Kalman filters/variants, MHT, particle filters, Bayesian methods, and data association.

  • Hands-on prototyping experience in MATLAB/Simulink and/or Python; demonstrated ability to translate algorithms to C/C++ for embedded or real-time targets.

  • Experience integrating onboard and offboard data sources and understanding latency, bandwidth, synchronization, and security implications of distributed sensing.

  • Strong systems engineering capabilities: requirements derivation, interface control documents, verification planning, and trade studies.

  • Prior experience deploying fusion algorithms on real-time or embedded processors and optimizing for latency and computational load.

  • Familiarity with simulation frameworks and test automation for lab/field characterization.

  • Model based systems engineering methodologies (MSOSA preferred).

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; demonstrated experience working across multi-disciplinary teams and presenting to leadership.
