Job Description:
The primary function of the Regional Safety Director is to promote safety and safety initiatives throughout the region and coordinate these efforts with all branch locations and other facilities within the business unit. This position is responsible for loss control prevention, reporting, investigation, and follow-up, relative to vehicle accidents, personal injury accidents, property damage, near-miss incidents, and customer incidents involving Airgas supplied products. This position must lead the efforts in the effective supervision, management, motivation and training of all Airgas associates in areas of personal safety, health, regulatory compliance, and environmental concerns. The Safety and Compliance Director is also responsible for ensuring that annual audits/facility reviews are performed for all facilities, in order to assess compliance with Airgas Safety Policies and Procedures, as well as Federal and State regulatory compliance requirements. This position is charged with the responsibility of implementing and maintaining the directives of Airgas' policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide environmental, health, and safety expertise to ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Formulates general safety policies and procedures to be followed by Region in compliance with local, State, and Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), FDA, and DOT rules and regulations.
  • Devises, supervises, and coordinates training programs or media which will increase proficiency in safe practices and promote safety consciousness.
  • Ensure the proper reporting, investigation, and corrective action for vehicle accidents, personal injury accidents, property damage, near-miss incidents, and customer incidents involving Airgas supplied products.
  • Promote the effective supervision, management, motivation and training of all Airgas associates in areas of personal safety, health, regulatory compliance, and environmental concerns.
  • Ensure compliance with Airgas' safety programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Complete periodic and one-time safety and compliance reports in a timely fashion.
  • Conduct facility audits to ensure compliance with the Airgas Safety Program and detect existing or potential accident and health hazards. Recommends corrective or preventive measures and work with management to develop and implement improvements.
  • Coach and guide associates and managers regarding safety compliance issues.
  • Provide training, or schedule training by others, and provide updates of the training requirements as they change.
  • Assure that safety meeting and training attendance are properly documented, in accordance with Airgas procedures and regulatory agency requirements.
  • Address specific reporting and record keeping requirements of the EPA, DOT, OSHA, and FDA, as well as other pertinent safety/regulatory compliance matters. Develop, implement and manage safety programs. Coordinate the efforts of the Safety and Incident Review Committees to reduce the frequency and severity of accidents and injuries.
  • Monitor monthly safety meetings and training conducted at facility locations. Compile reports addressing the efforts and effectiveness of the local meetings, to both regional and local management.
  • Direct the compliance efforts in the area of Compressed Medical Gas operations to assure compliance with the FDA. This will include annual reviews of manufacturing facilities, and the training and certification of employees.
  • Responsible for all environmentally-related regulatory compliance efforts including the provisions of SARA, RMP, and Waste Management.
  • Attend facility audits conducted by the corporate safety department at locations within the region.
  • Work closely with the operations group to ensure manufacturing and distribution activities are performed in a safe manner in compliance with applicable company policies and regulatory considerations.
  • Direct compliance efforts in the area of the U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
  • Coordinate security activities and protocols in support of DOT, Homeland Security, and other regulatory initiatives.
  • Makes studies and analyses of industrial accident causes and hazards to health for use by company personnel and outside agencies.
  • Prepare state, federal, and local environmental, health, and safety reports as required.
  • Willingness to travel 50% of the time throughout the region.

Are you a MATCH?
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Safety, Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related technical field (or an equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Minimum 8 years of safety management experience in industrial manufacturing or distribution; OR minimum 5 years if paired with a CSP, ASP, or similar safety certification.
  • Strong working knowledge of OSHA regulations and industrial safety standards.
  • Computer proficiency and intermediate knowledge of MS Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Valid driver's license, a reliable vehicle, and insurance coverage as required by company policy.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior experience in compressed gas manufacturing, cylinder filling operations, or chemical distribution environments.
