Work EnvironmentAircraft manufacturers, defense contractors, airlines, cybersecurity firmsAircraft manufacturers, aerospace companies, defense contractors
Industry UsageFocuses on protecting aircraft digital systems from cyber threatsDesigns, develops, and tests aircraft systems and components

Aircraft Cybersecurity specialists focus on safeguarding aircraft digital systems from cyber threats, requiring cybersecurity certifications and working within cybersecurity teams. In contrast, Aircraft Systems Engineers design and develop aircraft systems, emphasizing engineering expertise. Both roles are vital in the aerospace industry but serve different functions related to aircraft safety and security.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Aircraft Cybersecurity, and why are they important?

To thrive in Aircraft Cybersecurity, you need expertise in cybersecurity principles, risk assessment, and a solid understanding of avionics systems, often supported by degrees in computer science or engineering and relevant certifications like CISSP or Security+. Familiarity with cybersecurity tools, intrusion detection systems, encryption protocols, and compliance standards such as DO-326A is essential. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication skills help professionals anticipate threats and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These skills are crucial to protect aviation systems from cyber threats, ensuring passenger safety and regulatory compliance.

What are the main challenges faced by professionals in aircraft cybersecurity roles?

Professionals in aircraft cybersecurity often deal with the complexity of protecting highly specialized systems that integrate both legacy and modern technologies. Ensuring the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of avionics and onboard networks requires constant vigilance against evolving threats. Collaboration with engineers, IT security teams, and regulatory bodies is critical, as is staying updated on new standards and compliance requirements. The role involves a mix of proactive risk assessment, incident response planning, and frequent communication with multidisciplinary teams to implement effective security measures.

Can you make $500,000 a year in cyber security?

Aircraft cybersecurity professionals with senior roles, extensive experience, and specialized skills can potentially earn $500,000 or more annually, especially in leadership positions or consulting. Achieving this level often requires advanced certifications, such as CISSP or CISA, and working in high-demand environments or for large organizations. Most cybersecurity roles, including those in aircraft cybersecurity, typically have lower average salaries, but top-tier experts can reach high income levels through experience and specialization.

What is aircraft cybersecurity?

Aircraft cybersecurity refers to the practices and technologies used to protect aircraft systems, networks, and data from cyber threats and unauthorized access. As modern aircraft increasingly rely on complex software and interconnected systems, safeguarding these assets is critical for ensuring passenger safety, operational integrity, and compliance with aviation regulations. Aircraft cybersecurity professionals work to identify vulnerabilities, implement protections, and respond to cyber incidents affecting avionics, communications, and airline IT infrastructure.

Does TSA have cyber security jobs?

Yes, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) offers cybersecurity jobs focused on protecting transportation systems, including aviation infrastructure. These roles often require knowledge of network security, risk management, and relevant certifications such as CISSP or CompTIA Security+ and may involve working in government or federal environments with security clearances. TSA cybersecurity positions support safeguarding critical transportation networks from cyber threats.

What is cybersecurity in the aviation industry?

Cybersecurity in the aviation industry involves protecting aircraft systems, networks, and data from cyber threats and attacks. Aircraft cybersecurity professionals implement security measures, conduct risk assessments, and ensure compliance with industry standards to safeguard flight operations and passenger safety.

Does Lockheed Martin hire cybersecurity?

Lockheed Martin hires cybersecurity professionals for roles involving defense systems, network security, and threat analysis. Candidates typically need relevant technical skills, security clearances, and certifications such as CISSP or CompTIA Security+ to work in cybersecurity positions at the company.

  • Lead RMF execution, accreditation activities, STIG implementation, vulnerability management, and security compliance efforts to support program milestones and operational fielding
  • Drive cross-functional integration between systems engineering, avionics, software, networking, mission systems, test, and airworthiness teams to embed cybersecurity throughout the platform lifecycle
  • Support cybersecurity testing, incident response, root cause analysis, and risk mitigation activities across lab, ground, and flight test environments to improve platform resiliency and mission readiness
Required qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Cybersecurity, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical field
  • 8+ years of experience in cybersecurity engineering, defense systems, mission systems, or military aerospace programs
  • Experience leading cybersecurity activities for complex integrated systems or defense platforms
  • Strong knowledge of RMF, STIGs, system hardening, network security, secure architectures, and vulnerability management processes
  • Experience working across hardware, software, networking, and mission system integration environments
  • Ability to obtain a S//SAR level security clearance desired.
Preferred qualifications:
  • Experience supporting military aircraft, UAV, mission systems, or tactical communication platforms
  • Familiarity with resilient system architectures, zero trust principles, cross-domain solutions, and contested environment operations
  • Experience with MBSE methodologies and tools such as Cameo Systems Modeler
  • Background supporting cybersecurity test events, airworthiness, or platform accreditation activities
  • Active Secret or Top Secret clearance preferred
$170,000 - $250,000 a year
