What is AI for Science?

AI for Science refers to the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques to accelerate scientific discovery and research. By leveraging large datasets, complex models, and advanced computational methods, AI helps scientists analyze data, identify patterns, simulate experiments, and make predictions across various scientific fields such as biology, chemistry, physics, and climate science. This approach can significantly speed up research, uncover new insights, and solve problems that were previously too complex or time-consuming for traditional methods.

How does collaboration typically work between AI for Science professionals and domain experts in research teams?

AI for Science professionals frequently work closely with experts in fields such as biology, chemistry, or physics to identify scientific problems that can benefit from machine learning techniques. Collaboration usually involves regular meetings to translate complex scientific challenges into data-driven models, sharing domain knowledge, and iteratively refining solutions. Effective communication and a willingness to bridge gaps between computational and scientific perspectives are essential. This interdisciplinary teamwork not only enhances the impact of AI solutions but also fosters ongoing learning and innovation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AI for Science specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an AI for Science Specialist, you need a strong background in computer science, mathematics, and scientific domains, often supported by advanced degrees (e.g., PhD or MSc) in relevant fields. Proficiency with machine learning frameworks (such as TensorFlow or PyTorch), scientific computing tools, and familiarity with high-performance computing environments are typically required. Critical thinking, interdisciplinary collaboration, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for translating scientific problems into AI solutions. These skills are vital for developing innovative models, ensuring research rigor, and enabling impactful scientific discoveries.

What is the difference between Ai For Science vs Data Scientist?

AspectAi For ScienceData Scientist
Required CredentialsDegree in Science, Computer Science, or related fields; knowledge of AI and machine learningDegree in Statistics, Computer Science, or related fields; strong programming skills
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, scientific institutions, tech companies focused on scientific applicationsCorporate, tech firms, finance, healthcare, and other industries analyzing data
Industry UsageApplied to scientific research, simulations, and experimental data analysisUsed for data analysis, predictive modeling, and business insights

Ai For Science focuses on applying AI techniques to scientific research and experiments, often requiring a background in science and specialized knowledge of AI. Data Scientists analyze large datasets across various industries to extract insights and build models. While both roles involve AI and data analysis, Ai For Science is more research-oriented within scientific contexts, whereas Data Scientists work across diverse sectors on data-driven decision making.

Summary

As an AI Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE), you are a handson bridge between SensibleAI capabilities and realworld customer outcomes. You design, implement, and harden crossproduct AI solutions-spanning SensibleAI Forecast, Studio, and Agents, Genesis Blocks, and the OneStream core platform. You partner with Delivery and Engineering to validate value, improve reliability, and codify reusable patterns that others can adopt.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Apply OneStream, AI, and enterprise software expertise to help customers deliver transformative AI solutions within the OneStream ecosystem.
  • Play a key role in hands-on delivery for AI-focused implementations, expansion projects, and established deployments-not just early-stage POCs.
  • Interact, collaborate, and present to a diverse set of stakeholders (developers, sponsors, executives) to deliver AI-focused implementations.
  • Play a growing role in orchestrating the evolving SensibleAI Portfolio (Forecast, Studio, Agents) with OneStream core to deliver modular solutions tailored to complex financial and analytics requirements.
  • Produce reusable demos, implementations, checklists, workflows, best practices, and concise instructional videos that enable Presales, Delivery, Partners, and customers to leverage your learnings.
  • Diagnose and resolve AI solution field issues; document decisions and trade-offs; support Delivery and Partner teams with structured guidance.
  • Collaborate with AI Delivery to harden solutions for production and with AI Engineering to channel learnings and product gaps back into roadmaps.
  • Engage directly with finance and data teams; work with partner FDEs to increase capability and consistency across the ecosystem; facilitate workshops and office hours.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, data science, or relevant combination of education and experience.
  • 0-2 years of software engineering experience, with a focus on data science, AI, or machine learning concepts.
  • 1-2 years of industry experience in Applied Artificial Intelligence and/or Machine Learning.
  • 1-3 years of experience delivering/implementing enterprise software solutions in FP&A/CPM/EPM or data/AI platforms, including at least 1 year in customer-facing build roles.
  • Demonstrated success contributing to POCs or early implementations that transitioned to scaled rollout or productized assets.
  • Strong SQL; data modeling and ETL/ELT; REST APIs, identity/security basics.
  • Experience in Python and/or C#; automation and packaging; familiarity with containerization is a plus.
  • Experience in producing insightful data visualizations of complex concepts and dataset.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Direct experience with OneStream implementations or building Genesis Blocks / Marketplace content.
  • Direct experience within a prior Forward Deployed Engineering role.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Translate complex technical concepts into business value for finance stakeholders.
  • Depth in one or more areas (e.g., forecasting, LLM apps, CPM modeling) with breadth across data, integrations, and platform operations.
  • Hypothesis-driven approach; comfort operating with ambiguity; strong documentation and diagramming habits.
  • Work cross-functionally with Product, Engineering, Delivery, CS, Presales, and Partners; give/receive design feedback.
  • Design for reuse; produce assets others can adopt; contribute to internal standards.
  • Apply data privacy and governance guidelines in solution design.
  • Comfortable engaging and presenting to management level executives from time to time.

Travel (remove if not applicable)

  • Up to 25% travel may be required for discovery, workshops, readouts, and early implementation milestones.
