CAS uses intuitive technology, unparalleled scientific content, and unmatched human expertise to help companies create groundbreaking innovations that benefit the world. As the scientific information solutions division of the American Chemical Society, CAS manages the largest curated reservoir of scientific knowledge, and for over 117 years, has helped innovators mine, assess, and apply that information to keep businesses thriving. The CAS team is global, diverse, endlessly curious, and strives to make scientific insights accessible to innovators worldwide.
CAS is currently seeking an Academic Year Undergraduate Intern in AI R&D for Science. This is a 5-6-month placement for the 2026 fall (August-December) semester at our headquarters in Columbus, Ohio.
This internship is designed for undergraduate students in the chemical, biological, biomedical, physical, and materials sciences - or in computer engineering or data science - with an interest in applied research and development in AI for science. The Intern will work on a defined project - such as a modeling approach, data pipeline, or algorithm evaluation - running experiments and analyses under the mentorship of the CAS Data Analytics and Insights team, which provides regular feedback and guidance. It concludes with a technical findings report presented to the immediate team.
Job Accountabilities:
  • Support project work in a defined AI for science project area (e.g., a modeling approach, data pipeline, or algorithm evaluation)
  • Run experiments, benchmarks, or evaluations on models and datasets as directed
  • Assist with data preparation, cleaning, and analysis
  • Document findings and contribute to technical writeups
  • Present a technical findings report to the immediate team
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:
  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline, such as chemistry, biology, biomedical science, physics, materials science, data science, computer science, engineering, or artificial intelligence
  • Interest in applied research and development in AI for science
  • Experience with Python or R, and SQL
  • Demonstrated analytical, multi-tasking, problem solving, and planning skills
  • Ability to interpret reports, analyze trends and provide insights
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively in an open, agile environment as well as independently
  • Experience working with chemistry, life science, and/or materials science data preferred, but not required
