What is an Agile Lead?

An Agile Lead is a professional responsible for guiding teams in adopting and implementing Agile methodologies, such as Scrum or Kanban. They facilitate communication, remove obstacles, and ensure that team members are able to deliver high-quality products efficiently. Agile Leads often coach teams on best practices, foster a culture of continuous improvement, and help align project goals with business objectives. Their role is crucial in enabling teams to be flexible and responsive to change while maintaining productivity.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Agile Lead, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Agile Lead, you need a strong understanding of Agile frameworks (such as Scrum or Kanban), project management experience, and often a relevant certification like Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) or PMI-ACP. Familiarity with tools like Jira, Confluence, and other Agile project management platforms is commonly required. Exceptional communication, facilitation, and conflict-resolution skills help Agile Leads foster collaboration and continuous improvement within teams. These skills and qualifications are crucial for guiding teams through iterative development, ensuring project transparency, and delivering value efficiently.

How does an Agile Lead typically foster collaboration between cross-functional teams?

An Agile Lead plays a crucial role in facilitating communication and cooperation among diverse team members, including developers, testers, product owners, and stakeholders. They use agile ceremonies like daily stand-ups, sprint planning, and retrospectives to ensure alignment and transparency. By encouraging an open feedback culture and removing obstacles, the Agile Lead helps teams stay focused on shared goals and deliver value more efficiently. Additionally, they often mentor team members on agile principles and best practices to strengthen team cohesion.

Description
About Us
eSimplicity is a modern digital services company that partners with government agencies to improve the lives and protect the well-being of all Americans, from veterans and service members to children, families, and seniors. Our engineers, designers, and strategists cut through complexity to create intuitive products and services that equip federal agencies with solutions to courageously transform today for a better tomorrow.
Position overview
The Principal Agile Lead will lead the scaled agile delivery model for eSimplicity's support of a large-scale federal data and analytics modernization program. The program operates as a multi-team Agile Release Train supporting production platform operations, data engineering, analytics, public-facing reporting, APIs, AI-enabled services, documentation, user support, and modernization.
This role will coordinate PI Planning, sprint cadence, cross-team forums, delivery transparency, risk and dependency tracking, and continuous improvement across delivery teams. The Principal Agile Lead will work closely with customer product owners, program leadership, product, engineering, architecture, data, security, analytics, user success, and support teams to keep priorities, dependencies, and risks visible.
Responsibilities
  • Lead the scaled agile delivery model across the program, including PI Planning coordination, cross-team cadence management, dependency and risk tracking, and delivery transparency to the customer.
  • Ensure all teams can participate fully in agile practices, including two-week sprint delivery, quarterly Program Increment planning, backlog refinement, sprint planning, daily coordination, demos, retrospectives, and cross-team coordination forums.
  • Coordinate with product, architecture, engineering, data, security, AI, analytics, and user success leaders to align team backlogs with PI objectives, roadmap priorities, delivery constraints, and customer decision needs.
  • Maintain visibility into delivery flow, program risks, dependencies, impediments, decisions, and delivery health using customer-approved work management, documentation, collaboration, source control, and dashboarding tools.
  • Support routine reporting of delivery and product metrics, including deployment frequency, lead time to change, mean time to restore, change failure rate, burndown, sprint performance, PI performance, velocity, deliverable timeliness, and deliverable quality.
  • Facilitate regular demonstrations of working software, operational improvements, research findings, documentation improvements, dashboards, APIs, AI capabilities, and other demonstrable progress.
  • Promote blameless retrospectives and continuous improvement across delivery quality, service quality, collaboration, supportability, operational resilience, testing, and release readiness.
  • Lead agile coordination for applicable coverage areas, including cross-cutting program leadership, product management, engineering operations, architecture coordination, data operations, user success, support operations, and participation across all delivery workstreams.

Requirements
Required qualifications
  • 7+ years in IT consulting, with significant agile project/program management experience in the federal government space.
  • All candidates must pass public trust clearance through the U.S. Federal Government. This requires candidates to either be U.S. citizens or pass clearance through the Foreign National Government System which will require that candidates have lived within the United States for at least 3 out of the previous 5 years, have a valid and non-expired passport from their country of birth and appropriate VISA/work permit documentation
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field
  • Demonstrated ability to lead SAFe Agile Release Train delivery or comparable multi-team agile delivery in a complex technology, data, analytics, or cloud platform environment.
  • Experience planning and facilitating PI Planning, sprint cadences, cross-team synchronization, dependency management, risk tracking, demos, retrospectives, and continuous feedback loops.
  • Experience using agile work management and documentation tools to maintain transparent backlogs, risks, metrics, decisions, and delivery status for Government or enterprise stakeholders.
  • Ability to work across product, engineering, architecture, data, security, operations, user experience, and support teams to keep delivery aligned to outcomes rather than ticket volume alone.
  • Knowledge of delivery metrics and agile reporting practices that support leadership visibility, quality inputs, program increment tracking, and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to support documentation, definition-of-done, testing cadence, release readiness, and operational readiness practices across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to comply with customer-specific security, privacy, accessibility, quality, training, and data-handling requirements for assigned systems and data.

Preferred qualifications
  • Experience supporting federal, public sector, healthcare, or other regulated data, analytics, oversight, reporting, or public transparency programs.
  • Experience with modern work management, documentation, source control, collaboration, PI Planning, dashboarding, and delivery metrics automation tools.
  • Familiarity with cloud, DevSecOps, data platforms, business intelligence, AI/ML, data governance, metadata maturity, support operations, and user success delivery domains.
  • Experience applying Human-Centered Design, U.S. Digital Services Playbook practices, accessibility-aware delivery, and product outcome measurement in agile programs.
  • Hands-on experience building and optimizing data pipelines within the Databricks platform
  • Preferred certifications may include AWS, Databricks, SAFe Release Train Engineer, SAFe Program Consultant, SAFe Agilist, Certified ScrumMaster, Certified Scrum Professional, Kanban, or related agile credentials.
