The Position:

Manager, Payroll


Why you’re here:

The Manager, Payroll is the operational backbone of how our people - both internal staff and the clinicians we place - experience Core MedStaff every single week. Accurate, on-time pay is non-negotiable in healthcare staffing, and you are the person who makes that happen. This role oversees the full payroll lifecycle across a high-volume workforce, ensuring compliance, precision, and trust at every pay cycle.


How big is your job:

You will manage weekly and semi-monthly payroll for 250–1,000+ employees depending on census and strike coverage activity. You will be the primary escalation point for payroll inquiries, the internal expert on California labor law compliance, and a key cross-functional partner to Accounting, HR, and Operations. The Manager, Payroll reports to the CFO.


Here’s what you’ll do:

  • Manage weekly and semi-monthly payroll for 250–1,000+ employees with accuracy and on time — every time.
  • Review and validate payroll data including pay rates, overtime, bonuses, and deductions.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and California labor laws — you know these cold.
  • Oversee payroll tax filings, reconciliations, and year-end processes including W-2s.
  • Audit and manage employee timekeeping and approvals with a sharp eye for discrepancies.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for payroll-related inquiries from staff and clinicians alike.
  • Partner with Accounting, HR, and Operations to ensure data accuracy and cross-functional alignment.
  • Support payroll systems, reporting, and continuous process improvement.


A little bit about your work style:

  • Manage weekly and semi-monthly payroll for 250–1,000+ employees
  • Review and validate payroll data including pay rates, overtime, bonuses, and deductions
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and California labor laws
  • Oversee payroll tax filings, reconciliations, and year-end processes (W-2s)
  • Audit and manage employee timekeeping and approvals
  • Serve as primary contact for payroll-related inquiries
  • Partner with Accounting, HR, and Operations to ensure accuracy and alignment
  • Support payroll systems, reporting, and process improvements


Here’s what you’ll bring to the table:

  • 7+ years of in-house payroll experience
  • Strong knowledge of payroll compliance and tax regulations
  • Experience managing payroll in a mid-to-large organization
  • Advanced Excel skills and strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work onsite


Preferred:

  • Experience with high-volume payroll (250–1,000+ employees)
  • Knowledge of Avionté staffing software
  • Prior leadership or supervisory experience
