What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an ag engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Agricultural Engineer, you need a strong background in engineering principles, agricultural science, and a bachelor's degree in agricultural or biological engineering. Familiarity with CAD software, GIS systems, and industry standards like ASABE certification is often required. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with farmers and multidisciplinary teams. These skills enable agricultural engineers to design sustainable solutions, improve productivity, and address complex challenges in modern agriculture.

What projects does an ag engineer work on, and how do they collaborate with other professionals?

Ag Engineers often work on projects related to improving agricultural machinery, designing irrigation systems, or developing sustainable farming solutions. These projects usually require close collaboration with agronomists, farmers, environmental scientists, and sometimes government agencies to ensure designs meet both practical and regulatory needs. Teamwork is essential, as Ag Engineers must integrate feedback from field tests and coordinate with manufacturing or construction teams. This collaborative environment helps deliver effective solutions that address real-world agricultural challenges.

What is the difference between Ag Engineer vs Agronomist?

AspectAg EngineerAgronomist
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Agricultural Engineering or related field; Professional Engineer (PE) license often preferredBachelor's or Master's in Agronomy, Agriculture, or Plant Science; certifications like Certified Crop Adviser (CCA) beneficial
Work EnvironmentDesigning equipment, irrigation systems, and farm infrastructure; often in labs, offices, or on-siteResearching crop production, soil health, and plant management; primarily in labs, fields, or research stations
Employer & Industry UsageFarms, agricultural equipment companies, government agencies, consulting firmsFarms, research institutions, government agencies, agribusiness companies

Ag Engineers focus on designing and improving agricultural systems and equipment, while Agronomists specialize in crop and soil management to optimize plant growth. Both roles require related credentials and often work in overlapping environments, but their core responsibilities differ significantly.

What is an ag engineer?

Ag Engineers, or Agricultural Engineers, are professionals who apply engineering principles to solve problems related to agriculture, such as improving farming equipment, developing irrigation systems, and optimizing crop production. They work to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of agricultural processes by integrating technology and environmental concerns. Their work can also involve soil and water conservation, renewable energy, and food processing innovations. Ag Engineers often collaborate with farmers, agronomists, and environmental scientists to address challenges in modern agriculture.

Job description

Senior Electrical Design Engineer (all genders) We pioneered the Organic SolidFlow battery

CMBlu Energy is on an exciting journey towards becoming a global cleantech company. Our mission is to enable unlimited energy storage modelled on nature - for everyone, worldwide.

What are SolidFlow batteries?

SolidFlow batteries store energy in organic molecules. The absence of explosive materials makes them safe, the use of socially and ecologically conflict‑free raw materials makes them sustainable, and the almost unlimited availability of materials makes them scalable and cheap to procure. This makes our patented SolidFlow technology a game changer in the development of a global climate‑neutral energy system.

From start‑up to scale‑up: we're tackling it together

CMBlu Energy is developing from a start‑up focussing on research into a manufacturing scale‑up that is on its way to series production. Around 240 employees are working towards this goal at CMBlu Energy. Our head office is in Alzenau near Frankfurt, with a branch office in Obernburg. There are also subsidiaries in Athens, Greece and Petaluma, USA.

Your Responsibilities

  • Define electrical requirements for power flow, protection, and monitoring components within our battery energy storage and power conversion systems
  • Derive requirements from customer specifications, project constraints, risk assessments, and applicable IEC, EN, and VDE standards while ensuring alignment with mechanical, thermal, software, and integration requirements
  • Perform electrical calculations and analyses including cable and busbar sizing, short‑circuit behavior, voltage drop, thermal loading, protection coordination, insulation concepts, and fault scenarios
  • Develop and contribute to electrical system architectures covering HV and LV distribution, communication interfaces, protection philosophies, fault handling, and system integration concepts
  • Define testing and validation requirements, acceptance criteria, and compliance documentation while supporting FAT, SAT, certification, and customer compliance activities
  • Support customer projects throughout the entire lifecycle, participate in design reviews, FMEAs, risk assessments, and hazard analyses, and coordinate electrical testing and commissioning activities

Your Profile

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Energy Technology, Power Electronics, or a comparable field
  • Several years of experience in high‑voltage electrical systems, industrial power systems, machinery, energy storage, power conversion, e‑mobility, aerospace, or comparable high‑power applications
  • Strong knowledge of relevant IEC, EN, and VDE standards (e.g.: VDE 0113‑1, 0100‑410 and 0660‑600‑1) as well as deep expertise in HV design, protection concepts, grounding, insulation monitoring, short‑circuit behavior, and thermal design
  • Experience defining and reviewing technical requirements, electrical architectures, component specifications, validation plans, and verification evidence
  • Proven ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams including engineering, product development, procurement, production, and customer project organizations, ideally with experience in battery energy storage systems or grid‑connected power conversion systems
  • Fluent in English and German, with experience using automation, scripting, or AI‑based tools to improve engineering workflows considered a plus

Our Benefits at CMBlu Energy AG for You:

  • VSOP Program: With our Virtual Stock Option Program (VSOP), you can be part of the success of CMBlu Energy AG and benefit from the growth of our company.
  • Deutschland‑Ticket: We fully cover the cost of a Germany‑wide train ticket, allowing you to travel sustainably and comfortably.
  • Meaningful work: Work on the development of our innovative Organic SolidFlow battery, which makes an important contribution to sustainable energy use and storage.
  • Remote Work: Depending on the role, we offer the possibility to work partially remotely, if the position allows.
  • Development Opportunities: We support your personal and professional development through regular training sessions and exciting projects.
  • Fair Pay: We provide a competitive and fair salary that recognizes your performance.
  • Our Values: At CMBlu Energy AG, being reliable, innovative, and relentless is at the core of our collaboration.

If you are ready to take on new challenges and drive innovation, we want to hear from you! At CMBlu, you will work with a passionate team that is committed to excellence and continuous improvement.

Apply now and be a part of our exciting journey. We look forward to welcoming you to our team!
