What is an aerospace FPGA design engineer?

Aerospace FPGA Design Engineers are specialized professionals who design, develop, and implement Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) for aerospace applications. They create digital hardware solutions used in aircraft, satellites, spacecraft, and other aerospace systems, ensuring reliability, performance, and compliance with industry safety standards. Their responsibilities include writing hardware description language (HDL) code, testing and verifying FPGA designs, and collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams. They play a critical role in advancing avionics, communication, and control systems within the aerospace sector.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an aerospace FPGA design engineer?

To thrive as an Aerospace FPGA Design Engineer, a solid background in digital logic design, VHDL/Verilog programming, and a degree in electrical or computer engineering are crucial. Familiarity with FPGA development tools like Xilinx Vivado or Intel Quartus, as well as relevant certifications (e.g., Xilinx Certified Engineer), is commonly required. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving, and effective teamwork are highly valued soft skills in this role. These competencies enable engineers to deliver reliable, high-performance FPGA solutions critical for aerospace applications where safety and precision are paramount.

What are some common challenges faced by aerospace FPGA design engineers when working on flight-critical systems?

Aerospace FPGA Design Engineers often encounter challenges related to meeting stringent safety, reliability, and certification requirements for flight-critical systems. Designing for radiation tolerance, minimizing power consumption, and ensuring deterministic behavior are essential in aerospace environments. Additionally, engineers must collaborate closely with systems, hardware, and verification teams to integrate designs successfully and perform thorough validation and testing. Staying current with evolving industry standards like DO-254 is also crucial for success in this field.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Digital design architecting for wireless communication projects.
  • Fixed point design of signal processing blocks while working with systems engineers.
  • RTL coding, simulation, and test bench development.
  • FPGA synthesis and timing closure.
  • Hardware verification and troubleshooting; familiarity with logic analyzers.
  • Provide support to the RF and Software Engineering teams.
  • Perform other related duties of which the above are representative.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related fields plus a minimum of 2 years of demonstrated experience in FPGA design; OR an advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related fields
  • Proven expertise working with multiple clock-domain, high-utilization FPGA designs.
  • Experience with Xilinx FPGAs, SoCs, and the Vivado IDE.
  • Experience with tcl or python.
  • Must be U.S. Person (U.S. Citizen, or Permanent Resident) due to clients under U.S. federal contracts.
  • All employment is contingent upon the successful clearance of a background check and drug test.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering (MSEE).
  • Demonstrated experience with fixed point binary arithmetic, and digital signal processing designs.
  • Experience using MATLAB.
  • Experience with communication systems on FPGA or ASIC designs.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Office environment.
  • Occasional exposure to heat, cold, and allergens while performing tests or demonstrations in the field.
