What does an aerospace engineering intern do?

An Aerospace Engineering Intern assists professional aerospace engineers in designing, testing, and evaluating aircraft, spacecraft, satellites, and related systems. Their responsibilities often include conducting research, creating computer-aided design (CAD) models, preparing technical reports, and supporting the development and testing of prototypes. Interns gain hands-on experience by collaborating with engineering teams and learning about industry standards, safety protocols, and project management. This internship is a valuable opportunity to apply classroom knowledge to real-world engineering challenges and to develop practical skills for a future career in aerospace engineering.

What is the difference between Aerospace Engineering Intern vs Aerospace Engineer?

AspectAerospace Engineering InternAerospace Engineer
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in aerospace or related fieldsBachelor's degree (often master's or higher for senior roles) in aerospace engineering or related disciplines
Work EnvironmentInternship programs, often in aerospace companies, government agencies, or research labsFull-time professional roles in design, testing, manufacturing, or research within aerospace firms or agencies
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by students gaining industry experience; common in aerospace industryFull-fledged engineering roles; core workforce in aerospace industry

The main difference between an Aerospace Engineering Intern and an Aerospace Engineer lies in experience, responsibilities, and career stage. Interns are typically students gaining practical experience, while engineers are full-time professionals responsible for designing, testing, and developing aerospace systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an aerospace engineering intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Aerospace Engineering Intern, you need a solid understanding of aerodynamics, mechanics, and materials science, typically gained through progress toward a bachelor's degree in aerospace or mechanical engineering. Familiarity with CAD software, simulation tools like MATLAB or ANSYS, and basic programming skills are commonly expected. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and a willingness to learn set standout interns apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for contributing to projects, collaborating with teams, and adapting to the fast-evolving aerospace industry.

What types of projects and responsibilities can an aerospace engineering intern expect to be involved with during their internship?

As an Aerospace Engineering Intern, you can expect to work on a variety of hands-on projects such as assisting with the design, analysis, and testing of aircraft or spacecraft components. Interns often support experienced engineers with tasks like CAD modeling, data analysis from wind tunnel tests, or simulations using specialized software. You may also collaborate with cross-functional teams in manufacturing, quality assurance, and research, gaining exposure to real-world engineering challenges. The work environment is typically fast-paced and team-oriented, providing valuable opportunities to develop technical and communication skills for future career growth.
