What does an aerospace composites do?

A professional in Aerospace Composites typically spends their day preparing and fabricating composite materials, performing precise layup and curing processes, and conducting regular inspections to ensure quality and compliance with aerospace standards. They may also operate specialized machinery, follow detailed engineering specifications, and collaborate closely with design engineers, quality assurance teams, and production supervisors. Troubleshooting and documenting any manufacturing issues is a regular part of the job, helping to improve processes and maintain high safety standards. The environment is usually fast-paced and team-oriented, offering opportunities to gain hands-on experience with advanced materials and technology.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in aerospace composites?

To thrive in Aerospace Composites, you need a strong background in materials science, composite fabrication techniques, and experience with quality control standards, often supported by a degree or trade certification in engineering or manufacturing. Familiarity with technical tools such as CAD software, autoclaves, and non-destructive testing equipment is crucial, and industry certifications like ASNT or NAS410 are highly valued. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork skills are key soft skills for this role. These capabilities ensure the production of high-quality, structurally sound aerospace components while maintaining safety and compliance in a highly regulated industry.

What is an aerospace composites?

An Aerospace Composites job involves the design, manufacturing, testing, and repair of composite materials used in aircraft and spacecraft. These materials, such as carbon fiber and fiberglass, provide strength while reducing weight, improving fuel efficiency and performance. Roles in this field can include engineers, technicians, and inspectors who work with advanced fabrication techniques like lay-up, curing, and bonding. Employees may work in aerospace manufacturing companies, research labs, or maintenance facilities. This job requires knowledge of material science, structural analysis, and industry standards to ensure high-performance and safety.

Job description

Overview

Joby Aviation is seeking a passionate manufacturing engineer to join our composites manufacturing team with a focus on composites manufacturing, tooling, and scaling products from prototype to mass production. This role will support the development and scaling of composite aircraft structures and composite propeller systems from prototypes through high-rate production. This individual must be highly organized and self-driven, with a deep understanding of manufacturability and quality control. This position is exciting and rewarding, as engineers will see their ideas grow from concept to creation at Joby Aviation's fast pace.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and optimize composite manufacturing processes, including layup, trimming, secondary bonding, curing, resin transfer molding (RTM), assembly, and inspection

  • Support the development and scale-up of composite propeller manufacturing processes, including tooling, bonded assemblies, and finishing operations

  • Support the development of prepreg structures from autoclave and out-of-autoclave processes

  • Work with our technical team to support manufacturing and integration activities

  • Develop and maintain SOPs, work instructions, and manufacturing documentation for composite production

  • Design tooling, fixtures and equipment to scale up manufacturing as required

Required
  • B.S. in engineering with 2+ years of relevant work experience, OR 6+ years in a comparable role

  • Experience with composite materials and manufacturing processes, such as prepreg layup, vacuum bagging, resin infusion, resin transfer molding (RTM), compression molding, autoclave curing, oven curing, trimming, drilling, and adhesive bonding

  • Experience with composite tooling design, mold development, and vacuum bagging processes

  • Familiarity with aerospace composites manufacturing, bonded assemblies, and non-destructive inspection methods is highly valued

  • Have strong listening and verbal communication skills

  • Excellent problem-solving and teamwork skills while working with cross-functional teams

  • Experience in prototype manufacturing in a professional environment

  • Strong background in mechanical tooling design with proficiency in GD&T

  • Proficient with using 3DEXPERIENCE CATIA (3DX) or Solidworks

Desired
  • Experience with laser projection systems (Virtek or Aligned Vision)

  • Experience with composite cutting tables (Gerber, Zund, Eastman, etc)

  • Working knowledge in controls engineering (i.e. motion control, PLCs, machine sensors, etc)

  • Familiarity with propeller manufacturing, rotating composite structures, Ply designing, Metal to Composite bonding, Thermoplastic composites or other aerostructure applications is highly valued

  • Manufacturing background in a mass production environment and/or a regulated industry

  • Prior hands-on experience with student engineering organizations or competitive build teams such as Formula SAE, Design/Build/Fly, Baja SAE, or similar groups, especially where composites, tooling, manufacturing, or airframe/propeller fabrication were involved

  • Experience supporting the manufacture of composite propellers, blades, aerodynamic structures, or other high-performance composite components
