How much do aero performance jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 3, 2026, the average yearly pay for aero performance in the United States is $81,684.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $68,000.00 and $86,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Aerospace Performance Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Aerospace Performance Engineer, you need a strong background in aerospace engineering principles, mathematics, and physics, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with simulation software such as MATLAB, CATIA, or CFD tools, and knowledge of industry regulations and certifications like FAA or EASA standards are commonly expected. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork skills, along with effective communication, help professionals excel in collaborative and high-stakes environments. These competencies ensure accurate performance analysis, compliance with safety standards, and successful development of efficient aerospace systems.

What is the difference between Aero Performance vs Aero Technician?

AspectAero PerformanceAero Technician
CertificationsOften requires specialized training in aircraft performance and certificationsRequires certifications like FAA Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) license
Work EnvironmentPrimarily involved in performance analysis, testing, and optimization in labs or on aircraftHands-on maintenance, repairs, and inspections in hangars or on-site
Industry UsageUsed in aerospace companies, aircraft manufacturers, and performance testing facilitiesCommonly employed in maintenance, repair stations, and airline support

While both roles are involved in aviation, Aero Performance focuses on aircraft performance analysis and optimization, often requiring specialized knowledge and testing procedures. Aero Technicians handle hands-on maintenance and repairs, working directly on aircraft. Understanding these differences helps clarify career paths and employer expectations in the aviation industry.

What are some common challenges faced by Aero Performance engineers, and how can they effectively overcome them?

Aero Performance engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing aerodynamic efficiency with structural and cost constraints, interpreting complex simulation data, and collaborating across multidisciplinary teams. To overcome these, it is important to maintain strong communication with design, manufacturing, and testing teams, and to stay updated on the latest simulation tools and methodologies. Continuous learning and adaptability, as well as seeking mentorship from experienced colleagues, can also help address technical and project management hurdles in this fast-paced field.

What is an Aero Performance engineer?

An Aero Performance engineer is a professional who specializes in analyzing and optimizing the aerodynamic characteristics of aircraft to ensure optimal performance, safety, and efficiency. They use mathematical models, simulations, and wind tunnel testing to evaluate how an aircraft performs under various flight conditions. Their work helps determine important parameters like fuel efficiency, maximum speed, climb rate, and range. Aero Performance engineers often collaborate with design, testing, and certification teams to ensure the aircraft meets regulatory and operational requirements.

Job description

At Wisk, we're transforming the future of urban mobility through safe, all-electric, autonomous flight. We are a passionate team working together toward a sustainable future, solving high-impact problems that have never been solved before. By delivering everyday flight for everyone, we're making it possible to spend less time getting there and more time being there. If you want to be part of shaping the future of mobility, then read on!
We are looking for a Senior Staff Aerodynamics Engineer to join our Aerodynamic Analysis Team. The goal of an Aerodynamics Engineer at Wisk is to ensure that our vehicle performs as safely and efficiently as possible. You will be part of the Aerodynamic Analysis team that is responsible for the aerodynamic design of the aircraft, creation of the aerodynamic database, and execution of design trade studies to maximize performance of our vehicle.
This is a hybrid work opportunity. At Wisk, this means working onsite at our Mountain View office 3 days per week with flexibility for the remainder of the days.
Responsibilities
  • As part of the Gen 6 aircraft team, you will act as a Sr. Staff Aerodynamics Engineer for a novel type of aircraft development targeting the autonomous UAM market.
  • You will develop and run Computational Fluid Dynamics models
  • You will use existing model definition to create and modify CFD meshes for time-accurate, blade resolved models of the Gen 6 aircraft.
  • You will develop and maintain high-fidelity models of the Wisk Gen 6 Aircraft using industry best practices
  • You will support aerodynamic shape optimization for airframe components to maximize range and minimize noise signatures
  • You will take part in validating CFD results against flight test data from our Gen 6 aircraft, wind tunnel experiments, and lower-fidelity analytical tools.

Requirements
  • BS, MS, or PhD in Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering or related fields
  • Requires a minimum of 12 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 8 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with 5 years experience; or equivalent experience
  • Experience with rotorcraft performance and the theories associated with propeller and rotor-driven propulsion
  • You have applied knowledge of blade-resolved, time-accurate CFD codes
  • Highly experienced with steady and unsteady RANS solvers
  • Highly experienced with NASA OVERFLOW solver and associated gridding tools
  • Knowledge of optimization frameworks utilizing adjoint-based methods, surrogate modeling, or similar methods
  • Experience scripting with Python or MATLAB
  • Experience with scripting routines and best practices used for CFD analysis automation and post-processing
  • Experience flight matching Aero Databases with experimental test data, and validating Aero Databases against flight test and wind tunnel data.

Desired
  • Experience with HELIOS computational software framework
  • Familiarity with Siemens NX CAD software
  • Familiarity with PointWise or similar meshing tools
  • Experience with high performance computing systems
  • Familiarity with rotorcraft aeroacoustics
