What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Aerospace Performance Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Aerospace Performance Engineer, you need a strong background in aerospace engineering principles, mathematics, and physics, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with simulation software such as MATLAB, CATIA, or CFD tools, and knowledge of industry regulations and certifications like FAA or EASA standards are commonly expected. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork skills, along with effective communication, help professionals excel in collaborative and high-stakes environments. These competencies ensure accurate performance analysis, compliance with safety standards, and successful development of efficient aerospace systems.

What are some common challenges faced by Aero Performance engineers, and how can they effectively overcome them?

Aero Performance engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing aerodynamic efficiency with structural and cost constraints, interpreting complex simulation data, and collaborating across multidisciplinary teams. To overcome these, it is important to maintain strong communication with design, manufacturing, and testing teams, and to stay updated on the latest simulation tools and methodologies. Continuous learning and adaptability, as well as seeking mentorship from experienced colleagues, can also help address technical and project management hurdles in this fast-paced field.

What is an Aero Performance engineer?

An Aero Performance engineer is a professional who specializes in analyzing and optimizing the aerodynamic characteristics of aircraft to ensure optimal performance, safety, and efficiency. They use mathematical models, simulations, and wind tunnel testing to evaluate how an aircraft performs under various flight conditions. Their work helps determine important parameters like fuel efficiency, maximum speed, climb rate, and range. Aero Performance engineers often collaborate with design, testing, and certification teams to ensure the aircraft meets regulatory and operational requirements.

What is the difference between Aero Performance vs Aero Technician?

AspectAero PerformanceAero Technician
CertificationsOften requires specialized training in aircraft performance and certificationsRequires certifications like FAA Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) license
Work EnvironmentPrimarily involved in performance analysis, testing, and optimization in labs or on aircraftHands-on maintenance, repairs, and inspections in hangars or on-site
Industry UsageUsed in aerospace companies, aircraft manufacturers, and performance testing facilitiesCommonly employed in maintenance, repair stations, and airline support

While both roles are involved in aviation, Aero Performance focuses on aircraft performance analysis and optimization, often requiring specialized knowledge and testing procedures. Aero Technicians handle hands-on maintenance and repairs, working directly on aircraft. Understanding these differences helps clarify career paths and employer expectations in the aviation industry.

Job description

ABOUT THE JOB
At Anduril we are developing unmanned aerial systems capable of terminal guidance, long range intelligence collection, precision navigation, and unsupervised autonomy. Anvil, Altius, Ghost, and other developmental UAS platforms are built to operate in remote environments with limited user input, driving requirements for reliability and autonomy. We have developed an autonomy stack that receives user intent, responds to detections processed at the edge, and coordinates flight patterns for groups of assets. We are looking for systems engineers with experience in this field to help design and manage the next generation of Anduril's flight vehicles. In order to be successful at Anduril, a systems engineer needs to be familiar with simulation and rapid prototyping development to drive complex electro-mechanical and aero-performance design trades, in addition to supporting the engineering product development, production, and sustainment through the entire product lifecycle.

  • Design, develop, and maintain system components that meet functional and performance requirements in complex system environments
  • Conduct thorough testing and debugging to ensure the reliability, scalability, and resilience of software applications, especially within a distributed systems context
  • Work closely with hardware engineers and product managers to ensure seamless integration of software and hardware components
  • Collaborate with the team to define and document software engineering processes and practices, ensuring adherence to quality standards and regulatory requirements
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • 6+ years of post-grad industry experience, including but not limited to electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, or systems engineering
  • A passion for systems design development, integration, and test
  • Hands-on prototyping, troubleshooting, and build experience
  • Experience developing automated test scrips and frameworks using a common language (eg. Python, MATLAB, etc)
  • Extremely organized and detail-oriented
  • Excellent verbal & written communication skills
  • A sincere commitment to a positive, inclusive, and collaborative culture
  • Must hold a U.S. Secret security clearance, or higher
  • Ability to travel up to 25% as needed for test planning and execution
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Hands on experience with complex robotic systems
  • Familiarity with IP-Based networks
  • Experience with mission systems, including communications systems and components
