What are advanced battery concepts?

Advanced Battery Concepts refers to innovative technologies and designs in battery systems that improve performance, efficiency, and sustainability compared to traditional batteries. These concepts often include advancements in materials, manufacturing processes, and energy storage mechanisms. They aim to increase battery lifespan, reduce costs, and support applications such as electric vehicles, renewable energy storage, and portable electronics. Companies and researchers in this field focus on developing batteries that are safer, more reliable, and environmentally friendly. Examples include solid-state batteries, lithium-sulfur cells, and advanced lead-acid battery technologies.

What are common challenges faced by engineers working in advanced battery concepts, and how can they be addressed?

Engineers in advanced battery concepts often encounter challenges such as optimizing energy density while maintaining safety, managing thermal performance, and scaling up laboratory prototypes for commercial production. Addressing these challenges requires strong collaboration with cross-functional teams in materials science, mechanical engineering, and manufacturing. Staying updated on the latest advancements and adopting iterative testing and prototyping can also help engineers overcome technical hurdles and deliver reliable, innovative battery solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in advanced battery concepts roles, and why are they important?

To thrive in Advanced Battery Concepts roles, you generally need a strong background in electrochemistry, materials science, and engineering, often supported by a relevant degree such as chemical or electrical engineering. Familiarity with battery management systems, CAD design software, and knowledge of industry standards like ISO or UL certifications are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective teamwork, and clear communication skills set outstanding candidates apart. These competencies enable innovation, ensure product safety and reliability, and support successful project execution in a rapidly evolving energy storage sector.

What is the difference between Advanced Battery Concepts vs Battery Engineer?

AspectAdvanced Battery ConceptsBattery Engineer
CredentialsRelevant technical degrees, certifications in battery technologyEngineering degree, often in electrical or chemical engineering, with similar certifications
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, manufacturing facilities, R&D centersDesign offices, testing labs, manufacturing plants
Industry UsageBattery manufacturing, energy storage solutionsBattery design, development, testing in various industries
Common Search IntentBattery technology, manufacturing processesBattery design, performance optimization

Both roles focus on battery technology, with Advanced Battery Concepts often involved in manufacturing and R&D, while Battery Engineers focus on designing and testing battery systems. They share similar credentials and work environments, but their specific responsibilities differ within the industry.

Engineer - Battery Thermal Simulation

Our Next Energy

Novi, MI โ€ข On-site

Full-time

Re-posted 23 days ago

Job description

The Battery Thermal Simulation Engineer will be responsible to develop, maintain, and conduct high-voltage (HV) Li-Ion battery pack-level thermal and CFD analysis, develop battery pack thermal models based on test results, and provide technical advice to internal and external customers for the design optimization of HV automotive Li-Ion battery packs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Conduct battery pack thermal and CFD (computational fluid dynamics) analysis - running simulations on battery packs, modules, and electrical subsystems, verifying design concepts, and providing assessments and recommendations to mechanical, electrical, and hardware engineers.
  • Develop and coordinate test and validation activities for verification and validation of battery cells, packs, modules, and thermal management systems, including test plan setup, test involvement, project scheduling, and result analyses.
  • Analyze cell test data and develop equivalent circuit models (ECM) and life models; apply the resulting models for module- and pack-level simulations.
  • Develop battery Simulink plant models and battery pack thermal models based on test results.
  • Conduct cell-level thermal analysis and integrate it with electrochemical simulations.
  • Provide requirements for improvements to advanced simulation activities, including CFD, thermal, structural, and multi-physics analysis.
  • Contribute to the future development of software and hardware for simulation support.
  • Interact with validation engineers to conduct root cause analysis and provide technical proposals and solutions to resolve engineering problems.
  • Participate in benchmarking activities.
  • Be solution-oriented and adept at creating contingency plans to meet deadlines and milestones.
  • Perform any additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform the job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • M.S. degree or higher in Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, or Aerospace Engineering.
  • Minimum two years of industrial or academic experience with thermal and CFD analysis.
  • Experience with the latest thermal and CFD simulation tools such as Star-CCM+ and/or Fluent.
  • Experience with MATLAB and Simulink.
  • Experience in battery ECM and life model development using MATLAB/Simulink tools.
  • Experience with battery power-performance and life analysis.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:
  • Ability to differentiate and utilize both system and subsystem analysis techniques to evaluate complex interactions
