Job description

Position Overview:

To use good customer service skills in working with Adopters throughout the adoption process and place animals available for adoption into loving homes. Have a love for animals and the adoption process. Be able to process all adoption paperwork thru all stages. Work with animals, customers and volunteers in a professional, friendly manner.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Greet Visitors and help them throughout the sign in and adoption process
  • Answer phone calls, check messages and respond to emails in the Adoption Department mailbox daily
  • Take photos of new animals as they arrive in the Adoption Department, download and place in Pet Point under animal
  • Make kennel cards and place on proper kennel of animals
  • Place animal paperwork in proper cabanas and kennel room binders
  • Check inventory weekly on available animals for adoption
  • Clean kennel cards, along with adopted, stray hold, project dog stickers
  • Help customers bring in donations then complete, sign and copy donation receipt
  • Move dogs & cats to service center, clinic, kennels or recovery area
  • Recognize when an animal is sick and inform Adoption Manager, email clinic so that they may be checked quickly and spread of disease or illness is kept to a minimum
  • Go over and explain the Adoption Application with potential adopters and verify all information on application is correct and true
  • Process animal and potential adopters paperwork in ShelterLuv throughout the surgery, exit exam, illness and adoption process
  • Handle meet n greets with adopters and our animals & meet n greets with adopter’s dogs and HHS dog(s)
  • Be able to explain adoption paperwork and medical chart on adopted animals and direct them to the clinic for rabies tag and de-wormer​​
  • Make sure doors are unlocked at 11:00 am and locked at close of day
  • Go over outcome paperwork with Adopter and collect adoption fee
  • Clean up after animals when necessary



Supervision Received:

The Adoption Supervisor will oversee all Adoption Counselor staff on a daily basis. Adoption Supervisor will make all work schedules for staff and inform counselors of mandatory staff meetings and training classes.



Supervision Exercised:


To oversee that all visitors and volunteers are following HHS guidelines and report to Adoption Supervisor.


Qualifications & Skills:

  • Be able to read English fluently

  • Be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • 1 year experience handling money
  • Experience working with animals
  • Be able to read animal behavior and recognize signs of common sickness
  • Be able to follow protocol, procedures and adoption guidelines
  • Have good work ethic
  • Be able to use good judgment during certain circumstances
  • Be able to work well with other staff and volunteers
  • Follow instructions and complete task
