Medical Unit Clerk

The County of Riverside's Department of Riverside University Health System โ€“ Medical Center seeks a Medical Unit Clerk to join their L & D Birthing Center team. Under supervision, the Medical Unit Clerk will serve as the communication hub for the unit by answering phones and coordinating communication among patients, families, and healthcare team members. Registered, admitted, transferred, and discharged patients using the electronic medical record while ensuring accurate documentation. Coordinated with ancillary departments, including the laboratory, pharmacy, radiology, and transport services, to support timely patient care. Maintained unit supplies and ordered additional materials as needed to ensure efficient operations. Supported staff during obstetric emergencies by facilitating communication and activating appropriate response systems. Protected patient confidentiality, provided professional customer service, and performed general clerical duties to promote safe, organized, and efficient patient care. Work Schedule and/or Shift Times: 6/12-8 including every other weekend: shift times will be 6:30AM - 7:00PM.

โ€ข Transcribes physician's orders from patient chart to the proper forms in preparation for verification by professional staff; answers telephone; takes and delivers telephone messages.

โ€ข Provides routine information as requested to staff, patients, visitors, and the public; greets patients and visitors; places calls to doctors, other medical units, and support units as directed.

โ€ข Tracks admissions, discharges, transfer, and room changes for census purposes; completes proper forms and records for patient admissions, transfers, discharges, examinations, and testing; may assemble, disassemble, update, and thin patient charts.

โ€ข Maintains unit files; runs errands and transports supplies, specimens, and other materials as needed; contacts or receives calls from hospital departments, hospitals, doctor's offices, or medical agencies to coordinate or schedule services for patients.

โ€ข Responds to established emergency procedures; assists in ordering stock supplies; may distribute mail, packages, and flowers to patients as necessary.

โ€ข Make clinic appointments for patients; may prepare birth certificates and identification bands as necessary; may perform incidental typing duties.

Experience: One year of experience in clerical work preferably in a health care agency. Either or the following may be substituted for the required experience: Completion of 18 semester or 24 quarter units from a recognized college in secretarial sciences, office practice, business education's, medical assisting, or a closely related field; OR Completions of 360 hours of training from a recognized occupational training program in secretarial sciences, business education, medical assisting, or a closely related field. Knowledge of: Modern office practices and procedures including filing and operating standard office equipment. Ability to: Understand and follow oral and written directions; perform general clerical work and learn quickly the specific operations of a medical treatment unit; establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and fellow employees; work effectively under stress and in emergency situations.
