Position Summary

The Part-Time School Nurse assists the Head Nurse in providing comprehensive health services to students and staff. The nurse provides nursing care, health assessments, medication administration, emergency response, and support for students with acute and chronic health needs.

The Part-Time School Nurse follows established Individualized Health Care Plans (IHCPs), Emergency Care Plans, physician orders, and Lafayette School Corporation health procedures to ensure continuity of care and student safety while supporting the daily operations of the school's health office.

Essential Responsibilities

Student Health Services

  • Provide nursing assessments and treatment for students referred to the health office.
  • Administer medications in accordance with physician orders and district procedures.
  • Perform specialized health procedures as directed by physician orders and established health plans.
  • Follow existing Individualized Health Care Plans (IHCPs), Emergency Care Plans, and physician directives.
  • Respond to medical emergencies and provide first aid and emergency care.
  • Provide care and support for students with diabetes, seizure disorders, asthma, severe allergies, and other chronic health conditions by following established health care plans, emergency care plans, physician orders, and district protocols.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of student visits and nursing interventions.
  • Assist the Head Nurse with daily health office operations and student health needs.

Health Compliance & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate and confidential student health records.
  • Assist with required health documentation and reporting.
  • Support vision screenings and other health-related activities as assigned.
  • Follow district procedures regarding student illness, injury, and communicable disease concerns.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Communicate with parents or guardians regarding student illness or injury as needed.
  • Collaborate with the Head Nurse, teachers, administrators, and support staff regarding student health concerns.
  • Serve as a health resource for school staff during the assigned workday.
  • Communicate relevant health information in accordance with HIPAA, FERPA, and district guidelines.

Professional Practice

  • Follow Lafayette School Corporation nursing procedures, physician standing orders, and health office protocols.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professional nursing standards.
  • Respond calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Nurse, building administrator, or Director of Health Services.

Qualifications

Required

  • Current Indiana Registered Nurse (RN) License or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) License.
  • Current CPR Certification.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to adapt to the needs of a busy school health office.
  • Ability to respond effectively to emergencies.

Preferred

  • Experience in pediatric, community, public health, or school nursing.
