Adult Special Education Instructor

Full-Time | Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM | Raleigh, NC
Bring your teaching experience beyond the traditional classroom. The Pathways Day Program is seeking an educator to design and lead engaging, adaptive learning experiences for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
About the Program
The Pathways Day Program provides adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) a supportive, engaging environment to build skills, pursue meaningful activities, and grow independence through structured, person-centered programming.
Position Overview
The Adult Special Education Instructor will design, lead, and manage a dedicated learning area within the program, creating instructional activities that enhance participants' skills as groups rotate through the space throughout the day.
This role blends instructional expertise with hands-on activity facilitation, requiring the ability to adapt materials, methods, and pacing to meet the diverse needs and ability levels of adults with I/DD.
Key Responsibilities 
  • Develop and implement engaging, skill-building activities appropriate for adults with I/DD.
  • Provide instruction for rotating small groups of participants throughout the day.
  • Modify and adapt curriculum, materials, and instructional methods to meet each participant's individual abilities, communication style, and learning goals.
  • Incorporate participants' individual service/support plans and goals into daily activities.
  • Monitor and document participant progress, engagement, and support needs.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, organized, and welcoming learning environment.
  • Collaborate with other direct support professionals to ensure smooth group rotations and consistent programming.
  • Assist with personal care needs as needed.
  • Participate in staff meetings, training, and professional development.
Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Special Education, Education, Human Services, Recreation Therapy, or a related field.
  • Experience in education, special education, adapted instruction, or a related instructional setting.
  • Experience working with individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities.
  • Strong instructional and facilitation skills, with the ability to develop and teach lessons, introduce concepts, and lead structured learning activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to modify and adapt materials and instructional approaches for varying cognitive, physical, and communication abilities.
  • Patient, creative, and flexible approach to instruction and group facilitation.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to manage small groups throughout the day.
