What does an actuary intern do?

An actuary intern assists professional actuaries by analyzing statistical data, preparing reports, and helping to assess financial risks for insurance companies, pension funds, or other organizations. Their tasks often include working with spreadsheets, modeling software, and databases to support pricing, reserving, and forecasting projects. Actuary interns gain practical experience in applying mathematical and statistical techniques to real-world business problems while learning about the insurance and finance industries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an actuary intern?

To thrive as an Actuary Intern, you need a strong background in mathematics, statistics, and analytical problem-solving, typically supported by progress toward a degree in actuarial science, mathematics, or a related field. Familiarity with actuarial software such as Excel, SAS, or R, and progress on actuarial exams (e.g., SOA or CAS) are commonly expected. Attention to detail, strong communication, and the ability to work collaboratively help you translate complex data into actionable insights for teams and stakeholders. These skills ensure accurate risk analysis and support effective decision-making in the finance and insurance industries.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect as an actuary intern?

As an Actuary Intern, you'll typically work on projects that involve data analysis, building and updating actuarial models, and assisting in preparing financial reports or risk assessments. You may support senior actuaries in pricing insurance products, analyzing claims data, or forecasting financial outcomes. Interns often collaborate with actuarial teams as well as professionals from underwriting, finance, and IT departments. This hands-on experience helps you develop both technical and communication skills essential for a full-time actuarial career.
