Position: Medication Aide
Reports To: Resident Care Coordinator
Company: Orchard Park Assisted Living

Position Overview:
The Medication Aide is an essential member of our healthcare team, responsible for ensuring that residents receive their medications as prescribed. This role involves preparing and administering medications, maintaining accurate records, and collaborating with healthcare professionals to promote resident safety and well-being.

Key Responsibilities:

Medication Administration:

  • Prepare and administer medications in accordance with prescribed orders, adhering to the 5 rights of medication administration.
  • Read and interpret medication orders to ensure the correct dosage is given at the appropriate time.

Record Keeping and Communication:

  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date medication records for each resident, documenting all administrations and changes in orders.
  • Communicate with nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals regarding resident conditions and medication regimens.
  • Utilize the ECP system to relay information and receive shift reports.

Monitoring and Reporting:

  • Monitor residents for adverse reactions, side effects, or allergic responses, and report any concerns immediately to the appropriate team members.
  • Conduct pre- and post-shift narcotic counts with another Medication Aide or Supervisor, reporting any discrepancies promptly.

Medication Management:

  • Ensure proper storage and handling of medications in compliance with facility policies and regulations, verifying that medications are secure and not expired.
  • Dispose of sharps in accordance with state and federal guidelines.
  • Assist with monthly medication changeovers and complete the required monthly summaries.

Supportive Duties:

  • Assist the Resident Assistant by responding to call lights and resident requests when available.
  • Help the kitchen distribute meal trays during scheduled shifts.
  • Aid in maintaining the cleanliness and safety of resident rooms.

Compliance and Training:

  • Adhere to all facility policies, including infection control practices and emergency response procedures.
  • Notify the RN when your Medication Aide license is due for renewal and complete the necessary paperwork and fees.
  • Participate in ongoing training, mandatory in-services, and other educational opportunities.

Teamwork and Additional Duties:

  • Collaborate effectively with the care team to foster a positive work environment.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
  • Important: Medication Aides must not leave their shift until their replacement has arrived
Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Certified Medication Aide (CMA) or equivalent certification.
  • Experience in an assisted living or long-term care facility is preferred but not required.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to follow medication administration protocols.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Must pass a background check.

Physical Demands:

  • Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands for manual tasks, reach, and communicate verbally.
  • Occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, and perform activities that involve stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
  • Frequently required to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must have the ability to perform tasks requiring close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Schedule Demands:

  • Overnight Shift: 11pm-7am
  • Must be available to work rotating weekends and holidays.
  • This is a part time position: 16-24 hrs per week
