Job description

Job Overview

Fairview Range is looking for a dedicated Therapeutic Activities Assistant for our inpatient Behavioral Health department in Hibbing, MN.

The Therapeutic Activities Assistant supports the therapeutic environment of the inpatient psychiatric unit by facilitating structured and unstructured patient activities. This role promotes patient engagement, socialization, and emotional well-being through group programming such as music, movement, art, and recreational activities, within established safety and clinical guidelines.

Schedule: This position is full time, working 72-80 hours per two weeks. The shift length will be 8-hour evening shift. Weekends: Every other weekend.

About this unit

Fairview Range provides a continuum of mental health services, including inpatient, outpatient, and our Partial Hospitalization Program. Our inpatient Behavioral Health department expanded in 2016 and now includes two inpatient, acute psychiatric units. Both units treat a range of mental health issues in adult patients.

  • 34 beds between 2 units
  • Multidisciplinary care team including Psychiatrist, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners, RNs, LPNs, Unit Assistants, Social Workers, and Mental Health Practitioners.
  • Patient population: adult (ages 18+)

As a Therapeutic Activities Assistant, you will:

  • Prepare, open, and supervise the group/activity room.
  • Create and maintain a structured, therapeutic group environment while adapting to patient’s acuity, cognitive ability, and safety needs.
  • Actively engage patients in daily activities to reduce isolation and idle time.
  • Encourage participation while respecting patient readiness and autonomy.
  • Lead group activities such as music, exercise, art, and games as planned and directed.
  • Follow all unit safety protocols regarding materials and supervision, including maintaining organization and inventory of approved supplies.
  • Monitor patient behavior during groups and report concerns to nursing staff.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to support patient care plans.


Required Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Basic Life Support (American Heart Assoc or Red Cross) within 90 Days
  • BCS within 90 Days

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous mental health experience
