Acting Head information

What is an acting head?

An Acting Head is a person who temporarily assumes the duties and responsibilities of the head of a department, organization, or team when the permanent head is unavailable or the position is vacant. This role often involves making decisions, overseeing staff, and ensuring the smooth operation of the unit during the interim period. The acting appointment may last for a few weeks or several months, depending on organizational needs. Acting Heads are typically chosen based on experience, leadership abilities, and familiarity with the department’s operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an acting head, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Acting Head, you need strong leadership abilities, strategic decision-making skills, and relevant experience in the field, often demonstrated through prior managerial or supervisory roles. Familiarity with organizational management systems, budgeting tools, and performance evaluation frameworks is typically required. Excellent communication, adaptability, and conflict resolution skills help build trust and maintain team morale during transitional periods. These competencies are crucial to ensure smooth operations, effective team guidance, and continuity of leadership within the organization.

What are some common challenges faced by an acting head, and how can they effectively address them?

As an Acting Head, one common challenge is quickly gaining the trust of team members while maintaining continuity during a leadership transition. Balancing ongoing projects and making interim decisions without overstepping permanent changes can also be difficult. Effective Acting Heads prioritize clear communication, seek input from experienced staff, and focus on supporting their team's immediate needs. Building relationships and demonstrating stability helps ensure a smooth transition and organizational consistency.

Job description

As a thought-leader and best-in-class provider in education, wellness, youth development, and community-building, The YMCA of Metro Atlanta is one of the oldest and most essential non-profits serving in Atlanta. Today, we're looking for you to join us as we carry out our mission to positively impact lives and communities across the state.

At the Y, we're an association of like-minded people (staff, volunteers, and members), on the forefront of a movement to ensure that everyone -- especially children -- experience an equal opportunity to reach their full potential. In the course of a year, we provide more than 3,000 children, ages 6 weeks through Pre-K with high-quality literacy and STEAM-infused learning; give 58,000 youth and teens access to sports, aquatics, day and resident camps, teen leadership development programs, and employment opportunities; provide over 200,000 members with programs, services, and facilities to enjoy connection and maintain wellness regardless of age; and engage over 25,000 volunteers and donors from across Atlanta to share in the gift of supporting their communities.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

Under the supervision of the Center Manager/Director, the Head Start Lead Teacher is ultimately responsible for the implementation of the day-to-day operation of services for children ages 3-5.

This position will be a project, part-time position working full academic day hours with an end date.

  • Actively participate in teaching activities by consistently moving around the learning environment both indoors and outdoors.
  • Constant supervision of children during all activities (indoors & outdoors) as well as during all times when children are under their direct care.
  • Re-direct inappropriate behaviors in a positive manner that is supportive and non-punitive.
  • Respond quickly to a child in distress or a crying child by immediately calming them in a nurturing and appropriate manner.
  • Utilize developmentally appropriate feeding, toileting, cleaning, and health care practices for children with special health care needs.
  • Model appropriate language behaviors for children including grammatically correct verbal and written language usage.
  • Plan, prepare, and implement age-appropriate activities that are integrated across the curriculum; thematic; real, concrete, and relevant; stimulating and challenging; and based on the child's individual needs and interests.

  • Conduct all scheduled parent conferences and any additional conferences, in a time, manner, and location that is most convenient for parents. These conferences shall predominantly contain positive and developmental information rather than reports of behavior related incidents and child's areas of concern.
