POSITION SUMMARY
The Resident Director (RD) oversees residential life for Benedictine College students studying abroad in the Florence, Italy program. This position helps foster successful and inclusive study abroad experiences for students by overseeing student life, participating on program excursions, responding to emergencies and other necessary matters involving students, and collaborating with the Florence Program Director and staff members on programs and projects to encourage the intercultural development and community engagement of students.
This position is based in Florence, Italy, for 12 weeks. It is a part-time position working a maximum of 20 hours per week.
Requirements
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS IN FLORENCE:
  • Assist the Florence Program Director and staff in the administration and implementation of the Florence Program.
  • Participate in Florence Program orientation and staff meetings. Be thoroughly familiar with the Florence Program Handbook , Benedictine College Student Handbook, and other college publications.
  • Assist in maintaining a vibrant and ordered community within the student residence. This includes building community life, spiritual life, and supporting the academic aspects of the program.
  • Assist in maintaining a clean and safe residence community by means of room inspections, curfew enforcement, alcohol policy enforcement, and student conflict resolution.
  • Supervise the student staff. Make performance expectations clear. Provide supervision, guidance, and evaluation for the resident assistants (RAs). Build a rapport with staff so that they will turn to the RD with questions, problems, and concerns. Hold meetings on a weekly basis and promote a team concept among the RA staff. Provide advice and support to RAs dealing with potential or actual problem situations.
  • Be visible and available to residents. Be friendly, open and a role model to students. Encourage students to come to the RD with questions, problems, and concerns. Treat all students with respect.
  • Encourage students and RAs to initiate, plan and carry out social, spiritual, educational activities. Work with students in creating a positive tone in the residence halls.
  • Help students become aware of the College's mission and expectations of them as expressed in the Florence Program Handbook and other printed sources. Encourage students to behave responsibly. Guide students in their quest for character to the highest standards based upon BC's Benedictine tradition and the beliefs of the Catholic Church. Respond to unacceptable behavior whenever and wherever the RD becomes aware of it in a consistent professional manner. Provide counseling to students who are involved in problem situations.
  • Fulfill the structured requirements of the position. Submit reports that are timely and complete. Be on duty when assigned and fulfill all responsibilities while on duty.
  • Facilitate and participate in all aspects of the program, including applicable tours and trips.
  • Provide support and serve as a liaison for students in difficult health and well-being circumstances.
  • Act and dress as a professional member of the Student Life Office.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Residence Life.
