How much do accrual accounting jobs pay per year?

As of Sep 4, 2026, the average yearly pay for accrual accounting in the United States is $66,994.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $55,000.00 and $72,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is accrual accounting?

Accrual accounting is a method of accounting where revenues and expenses are recorded when they are earned or incurred, regardless of when the cash is actually received or paid. This approach provides a more accurate picture of a company's financial health by matching income to the period in which it is earned and expenses to the period in which they are incurred. Accrual accounting is required by generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) for most larger businesses, as it gives a clearer view of long-term profitability compared to cash accounting.

How does working in accrual accounting differ from cash accounting, and what challenges might I face in an accrual-based role?

In accrual accounting, you'll record revenues and expenses when they are earned or incurred, not necessarily when cash changes hands. This approach requires close attention to detail and strong organizational skills, as you'll need to manage accounts receivable, accounts payable, and track accruals accurately. Common challenges include ensuring timely recognition of revenue and expenses, reconciling discrepancies, and collaborating with other departments for accurate financial reporting. You'll often work with cross-functional teams such as finance, operations, and sales, which can enhance your understanding of the business and open doors to career advancement.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an accrual accountant, and why are they important?

To excel as an Accrual Accountant, you need a solid understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting, and accrual-based bookkeeping, typically supported by a degree in accounting or finance. Familiarity with accounting software such as QuickBooks, SAP, or Oracle, and certifications like CPA or CMA, are highly valued. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies ensure accurate financial records, compliance with regulations, and valuable financial insights for decision-making.

What is the difference between Accrual Accounting vs Bookkeeper?

AspectAccrual AccountingBookkeeper
Primary RoleRecording financial transactions based on when they occur, regardless of cash flowRecording daily financial transactions and maintaining accurate ledgers
Required CredentialsGenerally requires accounting knowledge; certifications like CPA are common but not mandatoryTypically no formal certification required; basic bookkeeping skills suffice
Work EnvironmentAccounting departments, finance firms, or in-house finance teamsSmall businesses, accounting firms, or freelance bookkeeping roles
Industry UsageWidely used in all industries for financial reporting and complianceCommon in small to medium-sized businesses for day-to-day financial record keeping

While both roles involve managing financial data, accrual accounting focuses on recording transactions when they occur, providing a more accurate financial picture, whereas bookkeepers primarily record daily transactions and maintain ledgers. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or hiring the appropriate professional for your business needs.

Is accrual accounting hard?

Accrual accounting can be complex because it requires understanding of concepts like revenue recognition and matching expenses to the correct period. It often involves detailed record-keeping and familiarity with accounting software, making it more challenging than cash basis accounting for some individuals. Certification and training can help develop the necessary skills for this role.

What does an accrual accountant do?

An accrual accountant records financial transactions when they occur, regardless of when cash is received or paid, ensuring accurate matching of revenues and expenses in financial statements. They prepare journal entries, reconcile accounts, and use accounting software to maintain precise financial records in accordance with accounting standards.
