What is an Accounting HR professional?

Accounting HR professionals are specialists who manage both financial records and human resources functions within an organization. Their responsibilities typically include tasks such as payroll processing, benefits administration, compliance with labor laws, and maintaining employee records. They ensure that financial documentation related to employees is accurate and up to date, and often coordinate between the accounting and HR departments. This dual role helps streamline operations and maintain both financial and legal compliance for the organization.

How does an Accounting HR professional typically balance responsibilities between financial tasks and human resources duties?

In many organizations, the Accounting HR role requires professionals to efficiently juggle both financial and HR-related responsibilities. You might spend part of your day processing payroll, managing benefits, and handling compliance with labor laws, while also reconciling accounts, preparing financial reports, and supporting audits. Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks are essential, as you’ll often switch between handling sensitive employee information and detailed financial data. Collaboration with both the finance and HR teams is common, and clear communication helps ensure accuracy and confidentiality while meeting deadlines. This hybrid role can offer unique career growth opportunities as you develop expertise across both domains.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Accounting HR professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Accounting HR professional, you need a solid understanding of accounting principles, payroll processes, and human resources management, typically supported by a degree in accounting, finance, or human resources. Familiarity with HRIS systems, payroll software (such as ADP or Paychex), and accounting tools like QuickBooks or SAP is also essential. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set top performers apart in this role. These skills ensure accurate financial management, compliance with labor laws, and smooth HR operations within an organization.

The Position:

Manager, Payroll

Why you’re here:

The Manager, Payroll is the operational backbone of how our people - both internal staff and the clinicians we place - experience Core MedStaff every single week. Accurate, on-time pay is non-negotiable in healthcare staffing, and you are the person who makes that happen. This role oversees the full payroll lifecycle across a high-volume workforce, ensuring compliance, precision, and trust at every pay cycle.

How big is your job:

You will manage weekly and semi-monthly payroll for 250–1,000+ employees depending on census and strike coverage activity. You will be the primary escalation point for payroll inquiries, the internal expert on California labor law compliance, and a key cross-functional partner to Accounting, HR, and Operations. The Manager, Payroll reports to the CFO.

Here’s what you’ll do:

  • Manage weekly and semi-monthly payroll for 250–1,000+ employees with accuracy and on time — every time.
  • Review and validate payroll data including pay rates, overtime, bonuses, and deductions.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and California labor laws — you know these cold.
  • Oversee payroll tax filings, reconciliations, and year-end processes including W-2s.
  • Audit and manage employee timekeeping and approvals with a sharp eye for discrepancies.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for payroll-related inquiries from staff and clinicians alike.
  • Partner with Accounting, HR, and Operations to ensure data accuracy and cross-functional alignment.
  • Support payroll systems, reporting, and continuous process improvement.

  • Serve as primary contact for payroll-related inquiries
  • Partner with Accounting, HR, and Operations to ensure accuracy and alignment
  • Support payroll systems, reporting, and process improvements

Here’s what you’ll bring to the table:

  • 7+ years of in-house payroll experience
  • Strong knowledge of payroll compliance and tax regulations
  • Experience managing payroll in a mid-to-large organization
  • Advanced Excel skills and strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work onsite

Preferred:

  • Experience with high-volume payroll (250–1,000+ employees)
  • Knowledge of Avionté staffing software
  • Prior leadership or supervisory experience
