What is an account project manager?

Account Project Managers are professionals who oversee projects for specific clients or accounts within an organization. Their main responsibilities include coordinating between clients and internal teams, managing project timelines and budgets, and ensuring that deliverables meet client expectations. They play a crucial role in maintaining client satisfaction by keeping projects on track and addressing any issues that arise. Effective communication, organizational skills, and the ability to multitask are key qualities for success in this role.

How does an account project manager typically balance client expectations with internal team capabilities?

Account Project Managers play a key role in bridging client needs and their organization’s resources. They regularly communicate with clients to clarify project goals, timelines, and deliverables, and then relay this information to internal teams. One of the main challenges is ensuring that client expectations are realistic and aligned with what the team can deliver, which often involves negotiating timelines or scope. Successful Account Project Managers are proactive in addressing issues early, facilitating open communication, and fostering strong relationships both internally and externally.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an account project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Account Project Manager, you need strong project management skills, client relationship expertise, and a background in business or marketing, often supported by a bachelor's degree. Familiarity with project management software such as Asana, Trello, or Microsoft Project, and sometimes a PMP or similar certification, is highly valuable. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and negotiation skills help you stand out in managing teams and client expectations. These abilities are crucial for delivering projects on time, maintaining client satisfaction, and ensuring organizational success.

Job description

About the job

Location: Remote – United States | Full-Time

Position: Project Manager

The project manager will provide project management services to support the planning, coordination, and execution of client projects. Working collaboratively with designated client and company contacts, the contractor will translate project objectives and feedback into actionable plans, coordinate project activities, monitor timelines and budgets, and facilitate communication among stakeholders to help ensure deliverables are completed within the agreed-upon scope and schedule. The contractor is responsible for managing the execution of assigned projects and providing regular project updates while determining the methods and approach used to perform the services.

Proactive Mindset- Very Important!

A key expectation of this role is bringing a proactive, collaborative mindset to every project. We’re looking for someone who works closely with both internal team members and clients to keep work moving forward in a coordinated way—thinking ahead, flagging needs early, and helping the team stay aligned at every stage.

This means actively partnering with others to anticipate client needs, surface potential issues early, support next steps across the team, and help maintain momentum through clear communication, consistent follow-ups, and shared ownership of outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and manage project plans to support the successful delivery of assigned client engagements.
  • Coordinate with designated company and client contacts to facilitate project execution, establish milestones, and support the timely completion of deliverables.
  • Monitor project progress, identify potential risks or bottlenecks, and recommend or implement appropriate solutions.
  • Facilitate communication among project stakeholders to maintain alignment on objectives, timelines, responsibilities, and deliverables.
  • Provide periodic project status updates to designated company and client contacts, including progress, risks, and recommended next steps.
  • Help ensure project deliverables meet agreed-upon scope, quality expectations, and deadlines.
  • Act as the eyes and ears of the organization within client accounts, identifying new needs, upcoming initiatives, and opportunities to expand our work.
  • Proactively communicate identified opportunities, key client insights, and recommended next steps to the Account Manager for follow-up and account growth.
  • Perform the services described in the applicable Statement of Work (SOW) and any mutually agreed-upon amendments.
Requirements:
  • Experience with project management software such as ClickUp.
  • Experience managing technical projects, such as website projects, through the software development lifecycle.
  • Experience managing graphic design, digital, print, and PDF production projects.
  • Ability to work within strict client requirements for data handling, security best practices, and related processes.
  • Fluent in English.
  • Availability to collaborate primarily during Eastern Time business hours, as needed for meetings and project coordination.
Preferred (but not required):
  • Waterfall and agile methodology is a plus
  • Content Management System (Drupal, WordPress, Shopify, AEM) experience—as a user or content manager—is a plus
