What does an account manager do?

An Account Manager is responsible for building and maintaining strong relationships with clients, ensuring their needs are met, and acting as the main point of contact between the client and the company. They coordinate with internal teams to deliver products or services that meet client expectations, handle client inquiries or concerns, and work to identify new business opportunities within existing accounts. Account Managers often oversee contract negotiations, manage account budgets, and strive to ensure client satisfaction to encourage repeat business.

What does an account manager do?

The position of account manager is a common role in both the sales and advertising industries. While the day-to-day expectations may vary by industry, the basic expectations are the same. An account manager is a professional who manages the strategy and business relationship with their customers. After an account has been “won” by the company or agency in question, the account manager is responsible for helping the client reach their goals and ensuring a continued, positive, and profitable relationship. Account managers should understand their client’s long- and short-term needs, and leverage their company’s internal resources (strategy, customer service, creative, etc.) to help meet those goals. They serve as the client’s main point of contact, and will often provide recommendations or “upsells” to enhance their customer’s success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an account manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Account Manager, you need strong relationship-building, negotiation, and project management skills, often supported by a degree in business, marketing, or a related field. Familiarity with CRM software like Salesforce, data analysis tools, and proficiency in Microsoft Office are typically required. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and organizational abilities help you stand out in managing client needs and expectations. These skills are crucial for maintaining client satisfaction, driving revenue growth, and fostering long-term business partnerships.

What are some common challenges account managers face when balancing client needs with company objectives?

Account Managers often navigate the delicate balance between meeting client expectations and aligning with their own organization's goals. This can involve managing multiple client accounts with differing priorities, ensuring timely communication, and sometimes having to negotiate or set boundaries to avoid overpromising. Effective Account Managers develop strong organizational skills and clear communication strategies to address these challenges while maintaining positive client relationships. Regular collaboration with internal teams is also crucial to deliver solutions that satisfy both clients and company standards.

Job description

The Position

CallRail is looking for an Account Manager to own and grow a portfolio of existing customer accounts. This role is responsible for driving expansion and cross-sell revenue, protecting retention, and acting as the primary point of contact for customers looking to get more value out of CallRail's platform. You'll run product demos, identify growth opportunities within your book of business, and partner closely with Support to resolve technical product questions that come up along the way.

What You'll Do
  • Own a defined portfolio of existing CallRail accounts, managing the full post-sale relationship.
  • Identify and close expansion and cross-sell opportunities across CallRail's product suite (e.g., Forms, Voice Assist, PCI, and additional call tracking capacity).
  • Drive account retention by proactively monitoring usage and health signals, addressing risk early, and leading renewal conversations for annual plan customers.
  • Deliver tailored product demos that show customers how additional CallRail solutions solve their business problems.
  • Partner with the Support team on more technical or complex product inquiries, ensuring customers get accurate, timely answers.
  • Build trusted, consultative relationships with key stakeholders within each account.
  • Maintain accurate forecasting and pipeline data in Salesforce, and report on key account metrics (MRR, units, back-to-base revenue).
  • Consistently meet or exceed monthly and quarterly expansion, cross-sell, and retention targets.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Sales, Customer Success, Support, and Product teams to advocate for customer needs.
What You'll Need
  • 5+ years of sales experience, ideally in account management, customer success, or SaaS sales. Preference for marketing technology experience.
  • Proven track record of meeting or exceeding revenue, retention, or expansion targets.
  • Comfort running product demos and translating technical product details into customer-facing value.
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills.
  • Experience working cross-functionally with Support or technical teams on customer escalations.
  • Working knowledge of CRM and sales tools (Salesforce preferred, Gong, Outreach) and disciplined pipeline hygiene.
  • Self-starter who thrives on ownership of a book of business and is comfortable being measured against quota.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.

If you do not meet all the requirements listed, we still encourage you to apply! No job description is perfect, and we may also have another opportunity that aligns with your skills and experience.

Additional Perks
  • Healthcare (one option covered at 100% for employees), Dental & Vision Coverage
  • Competitive HSA with company matching
  • Paid parental leave
  • Flexible vacation policy
  • 401K options with company dollar-for-dollar match
  • Employee stock options available from day one
  • $2,000 annual educational allowance
  • Catered lunch every Tuesday * an in-office perk
  • MARTA transportation or office parking expenses covered
  • Employee charitable donation company match, up to $500 annually
  • Regular company outings and events
  • Hybrid work options with $500 office stipend to set up your home office
