What Does an Accessioner Do?

Accessioners help prepare specimens for lab work. As an accessioner, you receive and unpack each sample, identify which test they are used for, check for contamination, and preserve them properly. You also need to sort and catalog each item accurately to ensure nothing is misplaced or mislabeled. Laboratory technicians may request information concerning the sample and testing, so accessioners must also be knowledgeable about the kinds of samples they handle and proficient in the different types of lab tests performed by their organization. This position is also known as specimen accessioners, phlebotomists, or laboratory assistants.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Accessioner, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Accessioner, you need strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and familiarity with laboratory processes, typically supported by a high school diploma or associate degree in a science-related field. Experience with laboratory information management systems (LIMS), barcode scanners, and sample tracking software is commonly required. Excellent communication, time management, and the ability to work efficiently in a team are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills ensure accurate sample handling, data integrity, and efficient workflow in laboratory environments.

What are accessioners?

Accessioners are professionals who are responsible for receiving, documenting, and organizing biological samples, such as blood or tissue, in laboratories or medical facilities. They ensure that each specimen is properly labeled, entered into tracking systems, and prepared for further analysis or testing. Accessioners play a crucial role in maintaining the integrity and traceability of samples, which is essential for accurate laboratory results. Their work often involves close attention to detail, adherence to safety protocols, and communication with laboratory staff.

Common Search & ComparisonAccessioner vs Data Entry Clerk

Accessioners primarily handle cataloging and accessioning new items into collections in libraries or archives, requiring specialized knowledge of cataloging systems. Data Entry Clerks focus on inputting data into computer systems across various industries, emphasizing speed and accuracy. While both roles involve data handling, accessioners work specifically with physical or digital collections, whereas data entry clerks manage general data input tasks.

What are some typical challenges an Accessioner faces when handling high specimen volumes, and how can these be managed?

Accessioners often encounter challenges such as managing high specimen volumes, ensuring accurate data entry, and maintaining sample integrity under tight deadlines. To manage these, strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and proficiency with laboratory information systems are essential. Many labs provide support through clear workflow protocols and teamwork, allowing accessioners to flag discrepancies quickly and ask for assistance during peak times. Being proactive and communicating effectively with lab technicians and supervisors can help maintain accuracy and efficiency even during busy shifts.
