What is an accessibility advisor?

Accessibility Advisors are professionals who help organizations ensure that their products, services, and environments are accessible to people with disabilities. They provide expert guidance on accessibility standards, such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), and may conduct audits, recommend improvements, and deliver training. Their goal is to remove barriers and promote inclusive practices, making sure everyone can access and benefit from various offerings.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be an accessibility advisor?

To thrive as an Accessibility Advisor, you need expertise in accessibility standards (such as WCAG), knowledge of disability legislation, and often a background in web development or user experience. Familiarity with assistive technologies, accessibility evaluation tools, and relevant certifications like IAAP (International Association of Accessibility Professionals) is highly valuable. Strong communication, problem-solving skills, and the ability to advocate for inclusive design help set exceptional advisors apart. Accessibility Advisors work closely with teams such as UX/UI designers, developers, and product managers to integrate accessibility best practices throughout the project lifecycle.
