Certified CS/SPD Technicians are responsible for cleaning and maintaining surgical tools and hospital equipment.It is your job to make sure that the sterilized tools are then organized into trayscontainingthe instruments required for routine or special surgeries. You are also responsible for checking equipment to make sure it is in good repair and up to date. Your overall goal will be to ensure a sterile environment for patients in care. A caregiver in this position worksnightsfrom11:00PM - 7:30AM.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Perform case pull functions.
Demonstrate proper handling of equipment, instrumentation and chemicals while adhering to preventative maintenance schedules and personal protective equipment (PPE) standards during the decontamination process.
Scan,sortand inspect instruments for functionality and cleanliness.
Assemble instruments according to provided lists and wrap and label them following documented procedures.
Ensure proper cleaning, decontamination,assemblyand high-level disinfection of reusable instrumentationin accordance withAAMI ST79 standards.
Monitor and control the distribution of supplies and equipment.
Perform record-keeping functions within the electronic tracking system, including processing,sterilizationand quality assurance documentation.
Participate inin-service education to stay updated on best practices and industry standards.
Build case carts using electronic preference cards and dispatch them to appropriate locations.
Perform preceptor duties andassistin educating non-certified technicians.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
High School Diploma or GED
Sterile Processing certification (e.g., CRCST, CSPDT, CFER or CER)
Military experience such as Hospital Corpsmen (HM), Machinery Repairman (MR),AircraftMaintenance Technician (2A3X3), Biomedical Equipment Specialist (68A), Small Arms Repairer (91F) or similar will be considered
Ability to use the computerized instrument tracking system to perform assigned duties, including obtaining instrument count sheets, special handling instructions for instrumentation, documenting sterilization loads and other tasks
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Successful completion of a recognized training program with certification in central service/sterile processing
Two - five years of experience in central service/sterile processing areas
Basic computer skills
Physical Requirements:
- Requires full range of body motion, including handling and lifting items that weigh 20-30 pounds.
- Requires the ability to push a fully loaded cart weighing up to 200+ pounds.
- Possible exposure to biological and chemical contamination.
- Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time.
- Requires corrected vision and hearing to within normal range.
Personal Protective Equipment:
- Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
