Job description

  1. TITLE:  Mechanic - Transportation
     
  2. QUALIFICATIONS:
    1. Proficiency in both diesel and gasoline engine repair, from the larger bus engine down to small air-cooled engines.
    2. Ability to plan and implement a good maintenance program.
    3. Ability to obtain ASE School Bus Certification.
    4. High School Diploma preferred.
    5. Physically capable of performing assigned tasks.
    6. Ability to work with staff, students and the public.
    7. Able to obtain a valid Idaho Class "B" commercial driver's license with school bus, air brake, and passenger endorsement.
    8. Ability to complete required paperwork.
    9. Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds.
    10. Previous experience mandatory.
    11. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
       
  3. REPORTS TO:  Head Mechanic.
     
  4. JOB GOALS:
    To support the delivery of School District 91's written, taught, tested and reported curriculum and contribute to maximizing student achievement.
    To keep the District's buses and cars in such a state of operating excellence that they present no problems or interruptions to the educational program.
     


  5. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    1. Inspects, diagnoses, and makes necessary repairs and adjustments to trucks, school buses, cars, and other light and heavy equipment such as tractors and lawn mowing vehicles.
    2. Performs routine automotive maintenance and preventative care.
    3. Completes all required paperwork.
    4. Stays current on the different types of buses/vehicles and the latest repair procedures available in the industry.
    5. Performs skilled and semi-skilled electrical and oxy-acetylene welding.
    6. Orders replacement parts.
    7. Refuels and lubricates equipment.
    8. Changes and repairs tires.
    9. Inspects all school buses and vehicles for safety requirements in accordance with Idaho State Codes.  Makes recommendations to the Head Mechanic of equipment requirements.
    10. Serves as a substitute bus driver as needed.
    11. Maintains high standards of ethical behavior and confidentiality.
    12. Has regular and predictable attendance.
       
  6. OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    1. Performs all other duties as required.
       
  7. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
    This position is scheduled for 8 hours per day, 254 days per year.  Monday through Friday is considered the normal workweek.  Emergency conditions may arise that will require attention at any hour of the day or night.  Benefits will be in accordance with approved Board policy.  Wages will be in accordance with the Transportation Salary Schedule and the needs of the Transportation Department at a Grade 8 to 11: $20.07 - $25.09 per hour.
    Grade 8 Less than five (5) years of experience on engine repair
    Grade 9 More than five (5) years of experience on engine repair.
    Grade 10 Certified Master School Bus Technician with at least ten (10) years of experience on engine repair.  (A minimum of one (1) of the years of experience must be with Idaho Falls School District 91)
    Grade 11 - Certified Master School Bus Technician with at least ten (10) years of experience on engine repair.  (A minimum of five (5) of the years of experience must be with Idaho Falls School District 91)
    This is an "at will" position in that the employer or employee may terminate employment at any time, or for any reason consistent with applicable state or federal law.  This "employment at will" policy cannot be changed verbally or in writing, unless the change is specifically authorized in writing and expressly approved by the Board of Trustees of District 91.
     








  8. EVALUATION:
    Performance of this position will be evaluated annually by the Head Mechanic in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on the evaluation of classified personnel.
    This position has been given an overall physical classification of heavy duty.
