Duties Description Attorney General Fellowship Program Applications Accepted August 10, 2026 - October 2, 2026 Program Details The Office of the New York State Attorney General (OAG) is recruiting applicants for the 2027 Attorney General Fellowship Program. The following are some program highlights: This is a two (2) year program for six (6) law school graduates. Placements begin in September 2027 and conclude in August 2029.

Applicants should have a demonstrated interest in working as a public service attorney. Fellows work as junior attorneys and receive training and mentorship. Fellows work to protect the rights and interests of the state and people of New York.

Fellows gain hands-on legal experience by working on investigations, affirmative and defensive litigation, public education, and community outreach projects. For 2027, we are offering one (1) placement in each of the following bureaus. Placements in New York City Charities Bureau The Charities Bureau has broad authority to oversee organizations that have charitable assets and conduct charitable activities in New York.

The bureau protects donors and beneficiaries from fraud by ensuring donations are used as donors intended; regulates charities and their fundraisers to ensure their compliance with New York statutes that require registration with and financial reporting to OAG; investigates and commences litigation against charities that misuse assets, engage in misleading solicitations, and/or violate their fiduciary duties; and reaches out to charities that fail to comply with applicable law to achieve compliance short of investigation and litigation. In addition to their enforcement work, the bureau conducts outreach to charities through public speaking engagements, written guidance, and symposia to provide them with information that supports their compliance with the law. Location is New York, NY Claims Bureau The Claims Bureau defends New York state and certain state authorities in the Court of Claims and defends individual state officers and employees in Supreme Court in civil actions for money damages arising in tort, medical/dental malpractice, unjust conviction, and breach of contract.

Location is New York, NY Labor Bureau The Labor Bureau (Labor) has been nationally recognized for aggressively enforcing labor standards, especially in low-wage industries where exploitation of workers is common. Labor brings civil and criminal prosecutions for violations of minimum wage, overtime, prevailing wage, protections against discrimination and retaliation, and other critical labor and employment laws. Labor represents state agencies such as the Commissioner of Labor, the Unemployment Insurance Appeal Board, and the Workers' Compensation Board in their enforcement and administration of labor laws.

Location is New York, NY Litigation Bureau The Litigation Bureau represents and defends the state of New York and its agencies, officials, and employees in federal and state courts in civil actions and proceedings involving a broad range of subject areas arising out of state legislation, regulations, and operations. The bureau's cases are often high profile, frequently present complex questions of constitutional law and statutory and regulatory interpretation, and generally have significant policy and financial implications for the state. Location is New York, NY Placements in Other Locations Litigation Bureau The Litigation Bureau represents and defends the state of New York and its agencies, officials, and employees in federal and state courts in civil actions and proceedings involving a broad range of subject areas arising out of state legislation, regulations, and operations.

The bureau's cases are often high profile, frequently present complex questions of constitutional law and statutory and regulatory interpretation, and generally have significant policy and financial implications for the state. Location is Albany, NY Westchester Regional Office The Regional Office (RO) has a litigation intensive practice that involves representing state agencies in the New York State Court of Claims, the New York State Supreme Courts, and the Federal District Court for the Southern District of New York. RO attorneys handle all phases of litigation, including motion practice, witness interview/prep, depositions, court conferences, and trials.

Attorneys also conduct hearings under the Red Flag Law (Emergency Risk Protection Order Law). The RO also has a robust affirmative practice with a focus on the research, investigation, and resolution of consumer-related deceptive practices and handles nonprofit transactional work. Location is White Plains, NY The AG Fellowship Team reserves the right to make placement assignments based on the needs of OAG.

Fellows receive a salary and benefits. The annual salary is $87,356 plus location pay where applicable (New York City and White Plains: $4,000). Eligibility for the 2027 AG Fellowship Program includes the following: Law students who are graduating from their JD program during the 2026-27 academic year.

Admission to the New York State Bar within the Fellow's first year is a condition of continued employment. Therefore, Fellows must be registered to complete the following exams/courses: - Take the Unified Bar Exam (UBE) offered in either February 2027 or July 2027. - Take the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE) offered in either March 2027 or August 2027.

- To register for the New York Law Exam (NYLE), you must complete all segments of the New York Law Course (NYLC) at least 30 days before the date of the next NYLE. - Take the NYLE at one of the times offered in 2026 or by September 2027 at the latest. - See the NYS BOLE website for more information.

- The OAG is unable to provide funding to cover bar preparation costs or exam fees. We are seeking a diverse pool of applicants, including the following: Critical and creative thinkers. Strong legal writing, analytical, and organizational skills.

Demonstrated commitment to public service and social, economic, and criminal justice. Fluency in other languages is a plus but not required.
