Work EnvironmentManufacturing, engineering firms, product developmentDesign studios, engineering departments, manufacturing
Industry UsageMechanical systems, machinery, industrial equipmentProduct design, architectural components, consumer products

3D Machine Modeling focuses on creating detailed models of machinery and mechanical systems, often for manufacturing or engineering purposes. 3D CAD Designers develop detailed designs for a variety of products and structures. While both roles require CAD skills and technical knowledge, 3D Machine Modeling emphasizes mechanical accuracy and functionality, whereas 3D CAD Design covers a broader range of design applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 3D Machine Modeler, and why are they important?

To thrive as a 3D Machine Modeler, you need strong skills in 3D modeling, mechanical design principles, and a background in engineering or industrial design. Proficiency with CAD software such as SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, or Siemens NX, along with relevant certifications, is typically required. Attention to detail, creativity, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for translating concepts into precise models and collaborating with engineering teams. These skills and qualities ensure accurate, manufacturable designs that meet technical specifications and project goals.

What is 3D machine modeling?

3D machine modeling is the process of creating three-dimensional digital representations of machines or mechanical components using specialized computer software. These models help engineers and designers visualize, test, and refine machines before they are physically built. 3D machine modeling is widely used in industries such as manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, and robotics to improve design accuracy and efficiency. The process often involves using CAD (Computer-Aided Design) programs to create detailed, precise models that can be used for simulations, prototyping, and production.

What are some common challenges faced by 3D Machine Modelers when collaborating with engineering teams?

3D Machine Modelers often work closely with engineers to ensure that models accurately reflect technical specifications and functional requirements. A common challenge is translating complex engineering data into visually precise and manufacturable 3D models while keeping up with frequent design changes. Effective communication is essential to resolve discrepancies and maintain alignment on project goals. Additionally, modelers must balance aesthetic considerations with mechanical feasibility, requiring both creative and technical problem-solving skills.

Job description

Overview
Tri-Point (SITECH Northeast affiliate/subsidiary) is seeking a 3D Civil Modeler/Designer to join our dedicated team. We are looking for someone with a passion for the construction industry, and knowledge of the GPS and total station technologies being used on today's jobsites.
Salary range: $60,000 - $80,000 annually
This is a primarily remote position, with occasional travel to job sites in the market. In this role, you will be utilizing the latest software to produce 3D surface models for GPS machine control and construction layout equipment. Our modelers bridge the gap between design and construction to provide our clients the data they need to get the best productivity out of their technology.
Since 2007, Tri-Point has been providing data prep and construction layout services for the heavy civil construction industry. We provide clients of all sizes with the 3D models for their GPS machine control and onsite construction layout.
Responsibilities
Tri-Point field crews work with the client to obtain site data needed for constructing the three dimensional surface model. Modelers have direct interaction with clients as needed. The Modeler reviews client-provided CAD files and plans to ensure all necessary data is available and communicates any omissions. Modelers develop layout maps and 3D surface models to meet the client's requirements. Most projects are fasted paced and will need to be turned around in about 1-2 weeks, and modelers will be working on concurrent project assignments during peak times.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Associate's degree in Construction or Civil Engineering desired, or equivalent heavy civil work or surveyor experience
  • Ideal candidates will have 3-5 years experience building 3D surfaces with Trimble Business Center, Carlson Civil, AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation InRoads, or Terramodel
  • Experience with Trimble, Topcon, Leica machine control and construction layout equipment a strong plus
  • Knowledge of and ability to read construction plans
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Good problem-solving skills and strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently to meet project deadlines in a remote work environment
  • Tri-Point will provide tools needed to build 3D models inclusive of computer/monitor(s)/software(s)

This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive. Your supervisor may request and assign similar duties.
Resumes that are mailed, emailed or hand-delivered to Tri-Point or any employee will not be considered. You must apply online. A background check and drug test are required as part of our pre-employment process.
