What is a 2nd and 3rd shift job?

2nd and 3rd shift jobs refer to work schedules that take place outside the traditional 9-to-5 daytime hours. The 2nd shift usually starts in the late afternoon and ends late at night, often running from around 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. The 3rd shift, also known as the night or graveyard shift, typically starts late at night and ends in the early morning, such as from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. These shifts are common in industries that require 24-hour coverage, like healthcare, manufacturing, and customer service. Working these shifts often comes with shift differentials, which are additional pay incentives.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a 2nd and 3rd shift worker?

To thrive as a 2nd and 3rd Shift Worker, you need reliability, attention to detail, and the physical stamina to work non-traditional hours, often supported by a high school diploma or relevant experience. Familiarity with workplace safety protocols, time-tracking systems, and industry-specific equipment is commonly required. Strong communication, adaptability, and the ability to work independently are vital soft skills for this role. These skills ensure smooth operations, safety, and consistent productivity during off-peak hours when supervision may be limited.

What unique challenges and benefits can I expect when working 2nd or 3rd shift positions?

Working 2nd or 3rd shift roles often involves adjusting to non-traditional hours, which can impact your sleep schedule and social life. However, these shifts typically offer quieter work environments, less direct supervision, and sometimes higher pay or shift differentials. Team collaboration may require clear communication with day-shift colleagues to ensure smooth transitions and information handoffs. Many employees find that off-peak shifts allow for a better work-life balance, especially for those with daytime obligations or who prefer a less conventional routine.

Heartline Staffing, in partnership with Purple Cow Recruiting, is seeking experienced Manual Machinists for full-time, onsite opportunities in Indianapolis, Indiana. These positions are specifically for skilled manual machinists with strong hands-on experience operating manual mills and/or lathes. This is not a CNC-focused opportunity.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Manual Machinist will operate a variety of traditional machining equipment to produce, repair, and finish metal components according to blueprints, technical drawings, dimensions, and specified tolerances. The ideal candidate is comfortable independently setting up and operating manual equipment, performing precision measurements, and completing machining operations in a production or shop environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Set up and operate manual lathes, mills, grinders, and drill presses
Perform turning, milling, threading, boring, drilling, and grinding operations
Perform dynamic balancing as required
Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications
Machine and assemble components according to required dimensions and tolerances
Use precision measuring instruments including micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, and other gauges
Verify dimensions and tolerances throughout the machining process
Make machine setup adjustments using traditional gauge-based methods
Operate welding equipment as required, including MIG, TIG, Stick, and Oxy-Acetylene
Perform metal spray processes as needed
Document measurements, calculations, and completed work according to company standards
Troubleshoot machining and mechanical issues in both standard and non-standard situations
Maintain safe equipment-operation and shop practices
Work independently while collaborating effectively with other team members
AVAILABLE SHIFTS
2nd Shift: 3:30 PM - 11:00 PM
3rd Shift: 10:30 PM - 7:00 AM
Two Openings Per Shift
IMPORTANT
These openings require strong manual mill and/or manual lathe experience. CNC experience alone does not qualify. Candidates must already possess the hands-on manual machining skills necessary to operate and set up traditional manual equipment.
