As of Aug 9, 2026, the average hourly pay for 14 age requirement in the United States is $15.53, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $14.42 and $16.83 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is the minimum age requirement for employment?

The minimum age requirement for employment varies depending on local and federal laws, as well as the type of job. In the United States, the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) generally sets the minimum age at 14 for non-agricultural jobs, with restrictions on hours and the types of work that can be performed by minors. Certain jobs, such as hazardous work, require employees to be at least 18 years old. It's important to check specific state regulations as they may be more restrictive than federal law.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in an entry-level job for a 14-year-old, and why are they important?

To thrive in an entry-level job at age 14, you need basic literacy and numeracy skills, a strong work ethic, and, where required, a work permit or parental consent. Familiarity with point-of-sale systems, basic computer skills, or food handling certifications can be beneficial depending on the job. Reliability, punctuality, and good communication help young workers stand out to employers. These skills and qualities ensure that young employees can contribute effectively, learn quickly, and build a foundation for future career success.

What types of responsibilities and work environments are typical for jobs available to 14-year-olds?

Jobs available to 14-year-olds are generally entry-level and often found in environments such as retail stores, restaurants, amusement parks, or community centers. Common responsibilities include tasks like cashiering, bussing tables, bagging groceries, or assisting with basic customer service. These roles are designed to be manageable for young workers, often with close supervision and flexible, part-time hours to accommodate school schedules. It's important to note that federal and state laws restrict the types of work and number of hours 14-year-olds can perform, focusing on safe and age-appropriate duties.
