What is the minimum age requirement for employment?

The minimum age requirement for employment varies depending on local and federal laws, as well as the type of job. In the United States, the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) generally sets the minimum age at 14 for non-agricultural jobs, with restrictions on hours and the types of work that can be performed by minors. Certain jobs, such as hazardous work, require employees to be at least 18 years old. It's important to check specific state regulations as they may be more restrictive than federal law.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in an entry-level job for a 14-year-old, and why are they important?

To thrive in an entry-level job at age 14, you need basic literacy and numeracy skills, a strong work ethic, and, where required, a work permit or parental consent. Familiarity with point-of-sale systems, basic computer skills, or food handling certifications can be beneficial depending on the job. Reliability, punctuality, and good communication help young workers stand out to employers. These skills and qualities ensure that young employees can contribute effectively, learn quickly, and build a foundation for future career success.
