As of Jun 11, 2026, the average yearly pay for 1099 cyber security in the United States is $132,962.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $111,000.00 and $150,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Can you make $200,000 in cyber security?

Cyber security professionals, including 1099 contractors, can potentially earn $200,000 or more annually, especially with specialized skills, certifications like CISSP or CISA, and experience in high-demand areas such as penetration testing or security architecture. Earnings vary based on location, project complexity, and the level of expertise, with senior or highly skilled contractors often commanding higher rates. However, reaching this income level typically requires significant experience and a strong professional reputation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the 1099 Cyber Security position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a 1099 Cyber Security professional, you need expertise in network security, vulnerability assessment, incident response, and a thorough knowledge of current cyber threats, typically backed by a degree in computer science or related certifications like CISSP, CEH, or CompTIA Security+. Familiarity with security tools such as SIEM platforms, firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and scripting languages is crucial. Strong communication, self-motivation, and effective client management skills will help you excel in this independent contractor role. These abilities are essential for delivering quality security solutions to clients, managing your own workflow, and adapting quickly to evolving threats and diverse environments.

What jobs qualify for 1099?

1099 jobs in cybersecurity typically include freelance or independent contractor roles such as security consultants, penetration testers, vulnerability analysts, and security auditors. These positions often involve project-based work, require specific skills like knowledge of security tools and certifications, and do not include employee benefits. Workers are responsible for their own taxes and expenses when working as independent contractors.

Is 25 too late for cyber security?

Cyber security professionals can start at any age, including 25, as the field values skills, certifications, and experience over age. Many successful professionals transition into cyber security later in life by gaining relevant certifications like CompTIA Security+ or CISSP and developing practical skills through training and hands-on experience.

What is a 1099 Cyber Security job?

A 1099 Cyber Security job refers to a cybersecurity position where the professional works as an independent contractor rather than a traditional employee. These professionals provide services such as vulnerability assessments, penetration testing, compliance audits, and incident response on a contract basis. Since they are classified as independent contractors, they are responsible for handling their own taxes, benefits, and business expenses. This type of work offers greater flexibility and potential for higher earnings but requires self-management and securing contracts independently.

What is the 80 20 rule in cyber security?

In cybersecurity, the 80/20 rule suggests that approximately 80% of security issues are caused by 20% of vulnerabilities or threats. For a 1099 cybersecurity professional, focusing on the most common vulnerabilities and implementing prioritized security measures can improve overall protection efficiently.

What are the typical responsibilities and challenges of working as a 1099 Cyber Security contractor?

As a 1099 Cyber Security contractor, your responsibilities often include conducting security risk assessments, implementing protective measures, responding to security incidents, and providing clients with recommendations tailored to their needs. One unique challenge of this role is adapting quickly to each client's specific systems, policies, and expectations, as you may work with multiple organizations simultaneously. Effective time management and communication are crucial, since you'll be responsible for delivering clear reports and timely solutions while working independently. Contractors often have more control over their schedules, but consistently staying updated with emerging threats and compliance requirements is key to ongoing success. This role offers the opportunity to gain diverse experience and to build strong professional relationships across various industries.
