Job description

CDL Training Manager โ€“ Adult Workforce Development

Position: Part-Time as Needed

Reports To: Director, Adult Workforce Development

Application Deadline: Open until position is filled

Starting Date: ASAP

Qualifications: Successful candidate must meet or be eligible to meet the Ohio Department of Public Safety requirements for a CDL Training Manager including:

  • Current and valid Ohio Department of Public Safety CDL instructor license, or eligibility to obtain required licensure.
  • Class A commercial instructor status, properly endorsed to operate all classes of vehicles for which the school offers training.
  • Valid Class A CDL with appropriate endorsements for vehicles used in training.
  • Proof of being licensed as the operator of a commercial motor vehicle for at least three years during the ten-year period preceding application, as applicable.
  • Completion of a driver training school manager course approved by the Ohio Department of Public Safety, or ability to complete the approved course as required.
  • Proof of having held a valid commercial instructor license for at least three years; or eligibility for a probationary training manager endorsement under Ohio Department of Public Safety requirements.
  • Ability to pass required background checks, driving record checks, physical/medical requirements, and other licensure requirements.
  • Driving record and professional conduct consistent with Ohio Department of Public Safety standards.
  • Knowledge of CDL training, commercial motor vehicle safety, pre-trip inspection, range instruction, road instruction, and student skill assessment.
  • Ability to supervise instructors, manage records, maintain compliance, and support adult learners.
  • Strong communication, organization, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
  • Commitment to safety, student success, professional ethics, and workforce development.
  • Ability to successfully pass a BCI/FBI background check and secure an adult education permit through the State Board of Education.

Add'l Preferred Qualifications: Prior experience managing or coordinating a CDL training program. Prior experience supervising CDL instructors or transportation training staff. Experience with adult education, workforce development, career-technical education, or industry training. Knowledge of Ohio Department of Public Safety CDL school compliance requirements and FMCSA Entry-Level Driver Training requirements. Experience maintaining training records, instructor files, vehicle inspection documentation, and student completion documentation.

Responsibilities: Serve as the designated Training Manager for the CDL training program. Manage day-to-day CDL program operations, including classroom, range, and behind-the-wheel instruction. Ensure CDL instruction is delivered by appropriately licensed instructors and in accordance with Ohio Department of Public Safety requirements. Supervise, support, and evaluate current and prospective CDL instructors. Conduct and document instructor assessments as required. Maintain required student, instructor, curriculum, vehicle, training, and business records. Ensure students complete required theory and behind-the-wheel training within applicable timelines. Monitor student progress and document successful completion of required classroom, range, road, pre-trip, and proficiency activities. Ensure CDL training vehicles, range operations, and instructional environments are safe, properly maintained, and compliant with applicable requirements. Assist with scheduling students, instructors, vehicles, range time, and road training. Coordinate with Adult Workforce Development leadership regarding program needs, enrollment, staffing, equipment, compliance, and student outcomes. Support the development, review, and improvement of CDL curriculum, lesson plans, training agreements, assessments, and related materials. Prepare for and participate in Ohio Department of Public Safety inspections, program reviews, and compliance requests. Communicate professionally with students, staff, business partners, state agencies, and community stakeholders. Collect and maintain documentation for accreditation. Participate in AWD events and required meetings. Perform other duties as assigned.

Salary: Placement on the AWD Mid-Manager part-time salary schedule
