Engagement Specialist for Faith Mission of Fairfield County

Full Time | Monday - Friday from 4pm - 12am

* Pay Rate $14 - $15/hr (Based on experience) *

Lutheran Social Services of Central Ohio is currently seeking Engagement Specialists for Faith Mission in Fairfield County. Faith Mission is one of the largest homeless shelters in our area providing meals and shelter to men, women and Veterans with dignity and compassion.


What will I do as an Engagement Specialist with Lutheran Social Services?

  • Greets all volunteers, residents and prospective residents in a professional, helpful and welcoming manner. Provides communication, information, and supplies to residents as needed related to shelter services including bed assignments, towels, bedding and self-care supplies.
  • Completes intake paperwork with new residents. Verifies eligibility for shelter approval including checking identification, shelter inquiry forms, must see CM list, and sexual offender list prior to approving for entry.
  • Maintains overall cleanliness and sanitation of shelter facility including resident dorms, hallways, floors, laundry, kitchen and lounges in assigned areas. Changes bedding in dorms as required when clients leave as well as on a weekly basis for those still in the shelter.
  • Performs inspections of bags and other storage items and property entering and/or leaving facility. Ensures that no unacceptable or dangerous materials enter the facility. Logs and maintains client prescription medications as well as over-the-counter medications securely in the medication cabinet. Follows procedures regarding how to record and dispense medications appropriately.
  • Holds shelter residents accountable for upholding shelter rules and expectations. Supervises completion of daily chores. Enforces curfew, lights out and morning wake-ups. Communicates any issues or concerns to Shelter Services Manager or Manager on-call.
  • Communicates with Shelter Services Manager regarding each resident's stay each evening, concerns regarding each client, and emergency situations through the log book, client files and relevant paperwork. Communicates with other day staff regarding Fairhaven and Veteran program residents when necessary. Reads census, e-mails, and files daily in order to maintain communication with all staff.
  • Take resident attendance, maintains bed count, and ensures shelter capacity.
  • Assists in receiving and delivery of the meal a month provision. Contacts providers three days in advance to remind them as well as to let them know how many to prepare for. Responsible for proper storage and labeling of all leftovers as well as disposal of leftovers after the three day limit.
  • Responsible for opening and/or closing of shelter each day following facility procedures.
  • Attends all mandatory all-staff meetings as scheduled.
  • Maintains a reasonable basic knowledge of substance use, mental health issues, homelessness, and medications (controlled substances vs. non-controlled substances).
  • Communicate and treat all residents with compassion and respect.
  • Facilitate shift report to oncoming shift personnel.

Requirements for an Engagement Specialist with Lutheran Social Services:

  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent work experience is required.
  • Experience with homeless or other special needs populations, preferred.
  • Ability to communicate with diverse groups of individuals.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, as needed.
