Job Description
The Pharmacy Supervisor provides leadership for medication safety, clinical pharmacy services, regulatory compliance, and pharmacy informatics/technology initiatives. This role serves as a key operational and clinical leader and functions as an extension of the Pharmacy Manager.
The Supervisor is responsible for developing and sustaining medication safety and clinical programs, ensuring regulatory readiness, optimizing electronic health record (EHR) workflows, and supporting daily pharmacy operations. The position provides leadership oversight of pharmacy staff with delegated authority for departmental decision-making and administrative functions.
A limited staffing component (0.1-0.2 FTE) is required to maintain clinical competency and support operational needs. This position performs all duties in accordance with organizational policies and applicable regulatory standards.
Essential Job Functions
Job Expectations and Responsibilities
  1. Leadership & Supervision
    • Hold authority for department decision-making and help oversee day-to-day administrative functions
    • May provide coaching, disciplinary action, and professional development, as assigned
    • Act on behalf of the Pharmacy Manager when needed
  2. Operations & Staffing Support
    • Assist in daily pharmacy operations and workflow optimization
    • Participate in staffing (0.1-0.2 FTE) as needed
    • Support scheduling, workload balancing, and productivity initiatives
    • Monitor medication use, purchasing, and cost containment efforts
  3. Medication Safety Leadership
    • Lead all medication safety initiatives across the organization
    • Maintain and advance medication event reporting, review, and follow-up processes
    • Chair Medication Safety Committee and related workgroups
    • Participate in root cause analyses and drive system-level improvements
    • Develop and disseminate medication safety education and trend reporting
    • Ensure compliance with national patient safety goals and regulatory requirements
  4. Clinical Program Oversight
    • Lead development and implementation of clinical pharmacy programs and services
    • Coordinate medication use evaluations (MUEs) and performance improvement initiatives
    • Support formulary management and Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee activities
    • Partner with medical staff to enhance evidence-based care
    • Oversee antimicrobial stewardship or similar clinical initiatives
  5. Regulatory & Accreditation Readiness
    • Assist with continuous readiness for Joint Commission and other regulatory bodies
    • Lead gap assessments and action plans for medication management standards
    • Contribute to policy, documentation, and workflow compliance
    • Participate in interdisciplinary efforts to resolve deficiencies
  6. Pharmacy Informatics & Technology Optimization
    • Collaborate with IT on build, maintenance, and enhancements of EHR and medication workflows
    • Advise on training resources and ensure staff competency in pharmacy systems
    • Evaluate and implement technology improvements that enhance safety and efficiency
  7. Performance Improvement & Strategy
    • Develop and track departmental quality, safety, and operational metrics
    • Lead cross-functional improvement projects
    • Measure and report outcomes (clinical, safety, and operations)
    • Perform other duties as required from time to time

Job Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor of Science or Pharm D. degree from an American Colleges of Pharmacy Education required. Must have a valid Ohio Pharmacy License in good standing with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy.
Experience: One year of hospital pharmacy experience preferred.
Job-related Skills: Excellent communication and human relation skills when dealing with co-workers, other Center employees, the medical staff, patients, families, and the general public.
